I think if WWE hired Shia Labeouf to wrestle at Mania it'd draw in more buys. I'd be pissed at any outcome other than Umaga beating the shit out of him.

As soon as this was mentioned on Raw, I almost wept.
This is a BAD IDEA.
Once again the actual wrestler will lose. They somehow manage to defeat wrestlers with ease, but as soon as someone who doesn't actually wrestle for a living steps into the ring they have no chance.
It happened with Shatner. It happened with Arnie. On a bigger scale, it happened to Bigelow, it happened to Big Show and now it's going to happen to Jericho.
This SUCKS.

Does anyone think that this will negatively affect Rourke's chance at winning the Oscar? I know that the Academy is supposed to vote based solely on the performance, but you know that personal bias has to get in the way every once in a while. Hollywood probably doesn't look too fondly on Rourke going out and doing this wrestling thing, similar to how the boxing world got pissed about Floyd Mayweather last year and the football world getting mad about Pacman Jones in TNA. But then again, Rourke is so out there and kind of a rebellious figure in Hollywood because of his past that it might not make a difference either way. What do y'all think?
In any case, I love the idea. I think after Jericho's performance over the past 6 months would have given him a higher spot on the card than a one-off match with an actor, but this will still be interesting. Rourke's got the basics and Jericho can carry just about anyone to a good match, and you know they're going to rehearse the be-jeezus out of it beforehand, so I'm looking forward to it.

I'm ambivalent about this right now. The recent Celebrity/Wrestler interactions at WMs have been fun, so I'll keep my mind open on this one.

Sigh...why? Didn't WCW show us that celeb involvement = fail? I think Rourke's pissing all over his Oscar chances if he does this, anyway. We all know what the media thinks of the WWE, and the effect will hurt him and the movie. And if Jericho has to job for a 52-year old actor...well, I hope the money's good, Chris. I may be biased, though. I'm still P.O.'ed about Bam Bam losing to LT to this very day.

this is the first wrestler/celebrity match I care about because this time the celebrity is actually decent and knows how to wrestle.

Having him involved in a match: Good.
Having him wrestle the match: Bad.
This would definitely be better handled via the Lashley/Umaga route.

This is a really bad move, not by the WWE but by Mickey Rourke. Rourke will tarnish everything the movie accomplished, win or lose. Randy 'The Ram' is supposed to be a washed up wrestler whose heyday had passed him by, not someone whose on the card for the biggest PPV in the world. If Rourke wrestles at Wrestlemania it is a complete contadiction to the film and might ruin his oscar chances. I dont doubt that Rourke can wrestle, we saw it in the film he was pretty good and actors tend to make better wrestlers than atheletes do but this just dosent seem right.
Also why has Chris Jericho been picked as his supposed opponent? He just seems to come out of the blue with it during that red carpet interview. They could have bulit this a lot better. Have Rourke appear as a guest on Raw and have him interviewed in the ring by JR etc. about the film and how he learned how to work and who helped him. Then Jericho can come out and tear Mickey verbally apart, along the lines of:
'I've been a professional for 18 years and despite my many title reigns and accomplishments i still recieve no title shot and is treated like dirt by the McMahons and held back by the likes of John Cena and Randy Orton. All you did Mickey was make a lousy film showcasing the sort of wrestling i have since left behind and a character that could never be a positive role model to any of these people. You Mickey are nothing but an actor and fraud, you dont understand the business that exists today. You say youve been trained by the likes of Rowdy Roddy Piper, well let me tell you something, Roddy Piper was kicked to the curb along time ago because he couldnt cut it anymore much like you Mickey. You were a lousy actor before and now your living the dream through a film about an industry that i and many others helped establish. Rourke for you to come here a take credit for revivng the wrestling industry with your oscar nomination is nothing short of a disgrace'
Mickey replies with some harsh words for Jericho and wa la you have a feud and a story. A much better way to introduce it than an interview on a red carpet!

IMO it's a bad idea. Rourke is kinda nutty so he might do it but I think both sides end-up looking silly. Jericho would have to sell for a 50-something actor and Rourke makes a serious, Oscar-worthy movie look like Ready to Rumble. And thats any different from any young wrestler having to sell for the 60 something year old Ric Flair?

Jericho is all about mainstream press. If this match happens, it will get the mainstream press that WWE likes around WrestleMania (Donald Trump at 23, Mayweather at 24.) THat way Jericho will get attention that he wouldn't if he was just taking on a wrestler like Undertaker.

This should be Pretty Cool. I cant wait to see all the promos between Jericho, Rourke, Flair, and who ever else (like someone said earlier, I could see Piper getting involved). Yeah i know how you feel. I really want to see this match, but I Kind of worried for Rourke's sake. I cant picture that it will damage him in Hollywood to bad, but i could see it really hurting his chances of winning that Oscar he rightly deserves. If I was Rourke I would have probably waited until after The Academy Awards to say anything about the match (but then again If he doesn't show up and get involved on TV until march, I think he might still have a good chance at winning) [quote author=brianzane board=WWE thread=179518 In any case, I love the idea. I think after Jericho's performance over the past 6 months would have given him a higher spot on the card than a one-off match with an actor, but this will still be interesting. This is gonna be the selling point of Wrestlemania to the main public. I also don't think jobbing would hurt him, it would probably just leave him in the same place he is already at. Rourke is considered "one of the boys" so he would probably be willing to have Jericho win.

Ok this post has spoilers so if you haven't seen "The Wrestler" please quickly pass my post by....
Gone yet? Good.
Ok if a Jericho vs Rourke match goes down (and I personally don't think it should) I think it would be hilarious/awsome to end the Jericho/Rourke match the exact same way "The Wrestler" ended.
For those of who who have ignored my spoiler warnings so far please note I am GOING TO RUIN THE ENDING OF THE WRESTLER in the coming text so please if you don't want it spoiled please do not read!
Ok, as I said, Jericho and Rourke should finish their match the same way the movie finished. Rourke has his heart problems, Jericho shows a small hint of breaking character wondering if Rourke is ok. Match continues until it is time for the final Ramjam spot. As soon as Mickey jumps off the top ropes...all the lights go out for a good 2-3 minutes and no commentary whatsoever. The credits start rolling on the titantron and Springsteen's song starts blaring. When the lights come back on, the ring would be without Jericho or Rourke. Mania continues on as if the match had never taken place.
Ok spoilers are over

Umm, thje Oscar vote was already tallied and will be awarded well before Wrestlemania as the awards show is the last week of Febuary. His Ocsar chances will not be affected by this in the slightest.

THIS. IS. GOING. TO. BE. EPIC!!!! It's this type of stuff that gets me psyched for wrestlemania, and makes it an event that stands out from just another PPV.

Haven't seen the movie so can't get pumped up to see this. Never even heard of this Mickey Rourke guy and he looks like some old bum that Jericho could beat with one arm tied behind his back. Not feeling this at all.... at least yet. If I get around to seeing the movie and get blown away then maybe I'd think differently. Man, haven't you watched the strip tease scene from 9 1/2 Weeks? I now feel too old.

Jericho was just on Larry King with Rourke, completely in character. He said he lost all respect for Rourke when he said that on the red carpet and he better watch out because he might just the match. Rourke wouldn't insult him but said he could probably take him in a boxing or bare knuckles match.

Mickey Rourke & Chris Jericho Appear On Larry King Live, Tease A Possible WrestleMania 25 Match
WorldNewsWrestling.com Written by Richard Gray
Mickey Rourke and Chris Jericho both appeared on CNN's Larry King Live earlier tonight. Before Jericho joined the show via satellite, Rourke talked to Larry King about his role as Randy "The Ram" Robinson in the movie "The Wrestler". Rourke talked about his lowest times and his comeback. When talking about "The Wrestler", Rourke said that the thing that meant the most to him about the film was how it was received by the wrestling community.
Chris Jericho joined the show and put Rourke over for his role in "The Wrestler", saying that he made no mistakes and did a good job of portraying the minor leagues of pro wrestling, not what he does in WWE. Jericho said that Rourke did make a big mistake by calling him out on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. Jericho noted that there is a big difference between playing a wrestler and being one in real life. He said that the Jericho/Rourke story would end differently than the movie if Rourke were to get in the ring with him.
Rourke responded by saying that he may have put his foot in his mouth. He said that he would box Jericho, but wrestling is not what he does. Jericho told Rourke that he should be careful what he wishes before because he might just get it. Rourke said that he was going to take the high road and that he respected Jericho. Jericho said he wasn't going to do that and that he didn't respect Rourke.
Rourke ended the interview by saying that he would love to get in the ring with Chris Jericho at WrestleMania but that he has to listen to those around him and that he can't do crazy things like that any more.
Richard Reacts: It looks like Mickey Rourke and Chris Jericho just set up a WrestleMania angle on a live news talk show on a major US cable network. That was a weird appearance for Rourke as he dropped both GD and the f-bomb on national television (I know they're all a little weird, but this one especially). I also found it pathetic that Larry King referred to WWE as the WWF, after all that he has done with the company. Oh and did anyone else think that phone call was weird from that lady? Mickey, are you single? He didn't even know what to say other than "he had a dog". I think Mickey has a cocktail or ten before he hits the news shows.

I find it ironic that people are saying that if Rourke does this it will affect his Oscar chances. Um, the movie is about RASSLIN' and it is insulting to wrestling fans to say if Rourke were to "lower" hmiself to the actual product itself it will tarnish something. I think Rourke himself discovered what an incredible job these atheletes do and wants to continue showing resoect to the profession (while actually making some dough off of it). And one thing Vince's carnival of craziness has proven time and again is that he knows how to book celebrities into fairly entertaining matches...So how about we stop hating until we see how it unfolds?
