I was thinking about some of the possibilities of the new Hardy's program, and one that interested me came to mind. What if it was a last ditch effort to protect Jeff before washing his hands of the burden of responsibility for Jeff's well-being?
Imagine if Matt cuts the following promo when asked to explain himself:
"I know what you are thinking. You're thinking, "How could he do that to his own flesh and blood?" Believe me, it was not easy, but I believe that I had to do it. It disgusts me that it was what was necessary, but I can live with what I did because now I know that he can too."
"Jeff, you know that I have always had your back throughout your entire life. I have been there for the good, but I have also been there for all of the bad. Many people have always assumed that you were destined for greater things than me, but those that truly know us understand that is partly because I have sacrificed so much of myself to get you there. Don't get me wrong, all the career opportunities that I have passed up or lost sight of to help you achieve your goals, I have no complaints about. They were my choice, and I made them for the right reasons."
"Recently, however, I have not had enough in myself to fight your battles for you. Dad and I could have lost you in that car wreck, and that incident with the pyro could have gone much worse than it did. Someone does not want you near the WWE title, and apparently they do not care how badly they have to hurt you to get what they want. Unfortunately, I cannot protect you anymore from the bad things that can happen in life. That is why I had to do what I did."
"I tried to fight your most recent battles for you, just like always. What did it get me? Beaten down by three men last Friday on Smackdown, and I had lost my focus on my own business. I lost the ECW title to Jack Swagger because I was distracted, and I did not regain that title at the Royal Rumble for much the same reason. Unfortunately, I am at a point in my career that I have been before, and like every other time family distractions threaten to derail me again. "
"The thing is, I am not young anymore. I cannot keep tossing opportunities aside for you Jeff. Not anymore. I protected you one last time, Jeff. I removed the reason for all of the attacks against you. If you are smart, you would recognize that and take advantage of it. Be safe, and use the safety to figure out who was behind it all and deal with the issue. Either that, or just be safe and float around aimlessly like you often tend to do. Either way, Dad won't have to mourn something happening to you. It nearly killed him to lose Mom. I won't have him lose you as well."
"You can be mad at me all you want, Jeff. You can even hate me. I would not blame you. Just know that I robbed you of your dream not out of hate, jealousy, or any petty emotion. I did it out of love. Now I must take care of my own business, and I hope that you have grown up enough to take care of your own without me shouldering half of your load."
The benefits could be multiple for that being his motivation. It would make a reconciliation a few years from now more acceptable. It still allows for the "whodunit?" angle to continue. Jeff's indignation and lack of appreciation can still draw out the heel in Matt while doing so in a more realistic manner. I also think the angle could mirror the HBK/Jericho one in which it took some build-up for the heel/face lines to truly be drawn.
What do you think?

This is exactly how I think it should go. We've seen the jealous partners/brothers story too many times, nothing that happens will be new.
But Matt doing it to protect Jeff, as he sees it, is new, and lends the conflict some ambiguity that is lacking in most feuds. Not to mention the fact that recent events do actually fit into this scenario. How many times has Matt helped out Jeff, watched his back and fought his battles? And how many times has Jeff reciprocated? The answers, respectively, are lots and none.
As I said in another thread, Matt's expression was difficult to judge. His behaviour leaves the next stage of this open to any spin they want to put on it.

The best feuds are always when the heel thinks he's right.
I do look forward to seeing how Christian fits into the equation now..

I think his reaction afterward was that he was disgusted with himself, but I think that it was a real reaction. I mean come on, he had to cost his brother the WWE Title against the man who slept with his now ex-girlfriend? You know Matt was pissed at himself for having to do that.

Well, I think Matt is professional enough to give the reaction that Creative want him to give. No matter how disgusted he may truly have been, if he was supposed to give it the deranged grin and mad eyed glare, he would have. His reaction to hitting Jeff seemed very deliberate. Stock still, never taking his eyes off him, not even glancing at Edge. And then just walking away without a flicker of emotion.

My brother's best friend for a spell ceased to be a friend at all by sleeping with my brother's then-girlfriend. It just takes effort.

Going by the Hardys DVD, it seems to be Jeff and Shane Helms who hold more of a grudge against Edge. Matt was quite open about everyone involved making mistakes, whilst those two were saying they could never respect Adam Copeland again.

First thing, why does everybody insist that Christian will (or even should) have anything to do with this storyline?
I will admit that I'm getting sick of seeing everybody take what is actually nothing more than completely made up guesswork by NEWZZZZ sites and blowing it way, way out of proportion.
We do not know when Christian will be making a return. And we don't know what he'll be doing once he does. Just because he was a main event player in TNA doesn't mean he's going to be a main-event player in WWE. Or even upper-card. Remember -- the guy was a mid-card comedy heel when he left.
For all we know, he could be feuding with Jack Swagger over the ECW belt now that Matt has moved on to a bigger feud and there's few to no credible challengers on the ECW roster.
My prediction is that Christan will pick up where he left off -- another guy on the mid card. Probably involved in the MITB match. But nothing more. I can't see why people think he's going to be instantly thrown into high profile feuds just because he was big in TNA.
Whew. Now that that's out of the way.......
While the OP is incredibly solid, I doubt it'll happen. The WWE doesn't often go with storylines that deep. Most storylines are cut and dry without a lot of meat to them, and don't require the audience to do any critical thinking.
The last time I saw them attempt a deep storyline was Mohammed Hassan. And they quickly watered him down and turned him into random "I hate america!" heel #54362459.

He hit Jeff over the head with a chair. So the nitpick is moot.

Matt Hardy is the Owen Hart to Brett.
No matter how they try to get him involved in a main even feud, he'll always be the lowercard brother who can't run with the main event.

I like that a lot actually, the idea Matt having to betray Jeff so that he could focus on his own career without the distractions. Well done sir.
