Musicianship wise, Rob Trujillo >>> Jason Newsted. Trujillo's an amazing bass player and its cool he's going to be in the Hall of Fame as its pretty unlikely that bands like Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, his previous bands, would ever have a chance of getting in. Newsted had great stage presence and exhibited highly energetic live performances, but as a bass player he was pretty mediocre. His "solos" live were lackluster and usually just degenerated into distortion/wah noise which is kinda cool and experimental in a way, but he wasn't really spectacular enough as a musician to be given solo time during a live performance and any bass solo should be exactly that, spectacular, as its a relative rareity in rock/metal gigs and due to the unsung nature of the instrument. His basslines on albums were mostly pretty run-of-the-mill, shadow what the guitar plays type of stuff. He was so far down in the mix on And Jusitce for All because you didn't really need to hear him. Did they do that because they were unsure of his abilities or out of respect for Cliff Burton? The bass in the preceding Garage Days Re-visited is prominent in contrast and Newsted has a few standout moments, but that was a rare EP not a full album and just cover tunes. The Black Album as well had a few standout bass moments, My Friend of Misery, The God That Failed, but nothing on a parallel and of the calibre of any of Cliff Burton's work, essentially on this album Newsted just doubled the guitar line. Newsted had a difficult job of filling the shoes of one of the all time greats Cliff Burton, and he did it in his own unique and energetic way. He fit very well into the direction Metallica went in; shorter, more basic songs with wider appeal as opposed to the 9 minute epics of the days of Burton. Trujillo is probably bored playing Jason's basslines though. Ultimately all three of Metallica's bass players deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe for differing reasons but they should all be in there. Great post! Ok, you've convinced me easily enough.

As for the second quote here, I know it's all down to personal preference and stuff, but I find OTT music fans hilarious. Master Of Puppets sucks now because you believe that Metallica as a band sucks now...ok... No, those songs were great. I'm not saying they suck. Rather I was so disguested with what the band became that it tarnished the whole experience for me, know what I mean? If I listened to the old stuff, it was a bit depressing, knowing where this great band ended up and what self obsessed jackasses James and Lars became. I just stopped listening to Metalica and stoped wearing the shirts. It was better to just let myself forget about them for awhile, rather than letting the knowlege of what they became tarnish the way those great songs made me feal and all the memories that became atached to them. Ah sorry for the misunderstanding, I understand why some people would feel that way. I still love them regardless.

Sure everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but hating them due to having one original member? I know Dave Mustaine is the primary song writer but Dave Ellefson was the co-founder and I wouldnt pay to see any band with only 1 original member. When the other Dave left, thats when I lost interest.

When the other Dave left, thats when I lost interest. I saw Megadeth two weeks ago and I swear they played like it was still 1985. Personally, I don't mind a lineup change. My favourite band, Nine Inch Nails, seem to do it every week and a half I find that pretty cool, because each member brings there own style to it, so even though Trent Reznor writes it all, whenever they play live, something new's added by whoever's playing. I think that's pretty awesome. You don't see a show repeated year after year.

I'm calling it now, Lars will give the worst, most self absorbed, awkward, and painful speech in HOF history.

Love his music (up to and including RISK) but Mustaine could fuel a whole year of srs Jericho promos. A total hypocrite and a sycophant.

It was appropriate that they gave him the invite and it was appropriate that he thanked them for it,too bad he had to decline. To have the possibility of seeing Dave on stage with them would have been surreal. As far as Trujillo HOF being inducted,no one should be inducted who wears stuff like this Or for that matter LOL

I wonder who will be there for Cliff, I know his mother passed in the early 90s and believe his father died alittle after the behind the music, think he had a sister. But anyways, I am excited for them, but alot of metal bands should be in before them, judus and motorhead for one.
And I say it again, Jason wasn't the greatest bass player in the world, but he filled the needs and took so much shit from them, for who hasn't seen it, here is the behind the music from cliffs death, to the shit they put Jason through. For this alone he belongs in the rock and roll hall of fame
and just because i felt like it, here is cliff at his best

He's a member of Metallica Therefore, why not? A band member is a band member Well CJ and Richie Ramone didn't get in with the Ramones,so someone there needs to make up their mind

I have a random question Does the Hall of Fame already decide who gets inducted within a band, or does the current members pick whos inducted with them?

For those who think that Trujillo shouldn't be in the induction, here's his audition and the band's thoughts...
To be totally honest, and this is going to get some heat, I think he's very close to being as good as Burton, if he isn't already on the same level.

Yeah, it must be nice riding the accomplishments of others into the Hall of Fame, because that's what he's doing. If I somehow joined Aerosmith tomorrow, would that make me a rock legend? Of course not, so why is Trujillo considered a Hall of Fame member of Metallica? Secondly, I was pointed out as being wrong about Newsted's number of albums, however I never said "studio albums". I just said "albums", and it's true. Newsted is also featured on "Garage, Inc.", "S&M". and several other live albums. He's on the majority of their released material.
