I usually play on normal, but at times I find easy much better and enjoyable.
A game should be FUN, a nice and (if possible) relaxing way to spend some spare time.
If I need to sit and play the same level/game/section 100 times because it's too damn difficult, it's not fun anymore. It's stressful and useless.
When the game requires more dedication, time and attention than studying or working, to me it's a waste of time.
A bit of challenge is welcome, as long as it can be overcome with reasonably ease. It's not like "watching a movie" because the player's input is still vital, but it should not require THAT much effort IMO.

exactly. I hate it when games seem to become work. The whole reason I play most games is usually a distraction from various work things(usually homework). So when I have to solve some crazy puzzle using complex math or memorize a 20 piece combo or something, I usually put the game away, and bust out some sports games or something

I start every game I play for the first time on normal. I get bored very quick, so prefer it to be at least a little bit challenging.

I almost always play on easy, for the same reasons others have stated. The only exceptions to this are the Fire Emblem games; I typically play them on normal, and then go through them on hard after I've beaten them once already.

Nothin' wrong with starting on Easy.
The only time I don't do it is if I've played the game before somewhere else.
Gotta get the controls down before you start the game, right?

I just don't find most modern games to be very challenging, so I usually have to go for the highest difficulty setting right from the beginning. This is why it pisses me off whenever I have to beat the game first in order to unlock the highest difficulty.

I prefer normal/hard myself
I understand the thinking behind playing it on easy but I just prefer the challenge.......even if it is frustrating as hell at times

I get bored on easy... the challenge is the fun for me. So I start on normal and move up(hard/expert) when its time.
I rarely see easy(unless there are achievements to unlock).
Again... just my preference.

I start at the easier level and depending on how well I play/how difficult the game is I crank the difficulty up a notch

I like to start on normal, than move up to hard later. I only drop to easy if normal is to frustrating.
Then you've got games like Devil May Cry and God of War, where if you cock up enough, they give you the option of switching over to easy. Probably the only games that take pity on you for sucking.

If the game lets me get achivements on easy, I shall play it on easy. My video game playing time is limited so I hate being stuck on a game for a very long time.

I don't play very often, but when I do I usually just play on the easiest mode until I have enough skill to progress onto the harder difficulties. Don't see much wrong with doing that. Games are meant to be enjoyable, whatever the difficulty level.

I usually play on normal now, but yeah, I understand playing it on easy. Until a few years ago, I'd have done the same thing.

No, there's nothing wrong with playing on the easy setting. I usually play on the easy setting, until I get more experienced with the game, then I move up. The one exception is probably THIS GAME: Even on Easy, this game was hard as hell to win in.

Viewtiful Joe 1 or 2 on Ultra V Rated mode will almost surely cause you to go mad.

I start on Easy for the following reasons:
1) I want to be able to beat the game the first time through. If I enjoyed Easy mode, I'll play the higher difficulties. 2) To experience the story. 3) To learn the controls. 4) To see if there are any bugs/gliches/bad controls.

I usually start on normal, I figure that's the intended game play experience for everyone who plays games as much as i do. I rarely go on harder difficulties unless I have cheats or it's a REALLY fun game.

for me, racing games are more fun in the easy/normal modes. in the harder levels, they suck the fun out as one bad braking move and your career is over.
but there are games like Halo 3, Half life, where the enemies become less predicatable and you get a sense of real achievement when you survive a tough battle. i mean i found halo 3 pretty meh on easy, but when i played it on heroic, i kind of got that whole "Save the world" vibe..
