Because there is already public awareness of the characters which helps a lot with the promotion I suppose...but if its geared towards younger, "new" fans, did they really gain much? Because other than parodies of those characters, those fans wouldn't really even have a clue who they are. Yeah because the media makes a bigger deal out of it this way enhancing public awareness of it.

It looks pretty good, since I always liked Star Wars more than Star Trek, and this seems to be more action packed ala a Star Wars flick.

I've picked up the tickets for me and my companion. We go in 2 hours, and I'm a die hard fan, and I know it's retconned, but I'm already having a mini nerdgasm. I can't even type decently.

Paramount has treated the hardcore trek fans like crap since UPN. Trekkies, in general, hate all attempts to make the show more accessible, as both Voyager and Enterprise were founded on the same premise, and both shows sucked, whereas DS9, which was inaccessable as heck, is held in very high esteem, and since the success of BSG, is considered vindicated over "Let's remake TNG, but in the past, or with a girl captain, that will make people watch again." Look, Star Trek is a very old show, with a lot of history behind it, and a hardcore fanbase that takes great delight in knowing this stuff, and when the studio says, we don't care, it's demeaning to a fanbase that carried a show you gave up on. I really don't have high hopes for this film. It's a reboot, it's just for the money, I don't expect much out of it. Plus it has time travel, which I f'(*$% hate.

As a big Trek fan, I really loved the movie. I'd rank it up there with Khan, Voyage Home, and First Contact.
I thought I'd have nerdrage over the whole rebooting thing, but it's handled really well and done in a way that doesn't retcon out the original continuity.

It's a reboot, it's just for the money What a load of horse manure. If what I saw is "just for the money", i.e, a film with more heart and effort than the last two combined, and the spirit of the journey embodied by these youthful, aggresive actors....they can do this every-single-time Best Star Trek movie since First Contact.

To be fair, I am not sure if it's based on the same script or anything, but the idea of a "young and new" Starship Academy sort of movie was pitched YEARS ago, but Roddenberry shot it down by making accusations like that it'd be in the style of Police Academy, among other claims. "Sulu" George Takei also encouraged fans to protest if they got replaced with other actors, so it died before ever making it into production. Going by memory with this, so some details may be off, but it's not likely something the studio pulled out of its ass on the 11th hour or something, since the concept isn't new or anything.

Does anyone know if there will be any small references to LOST in the movie? I only ask because there were little nods to it in JJ Abrams other stuff (Cloverfield, MI3). Anyone know> Well it has time travel in but that's the only thing I noticed. Never been a Star Trek fan at all, I basically went to see this because the trailer looked great and it's JJ Abrams. I LOVED this film, there wasn't one moment where I found myself bored, acting for the most part was brilliant, action scenes where fast-paced and tense, the story had enough depth that you actually had to think a little without it being too confusing. I couldn't recommend this more.

Saw it last night on the IMAX @ 10pm.
Hated it. So much so I got a refund. Whoever said it was just for the money was right.

The villain was lame. The story was laughable IMO. Everything fit together to nicely. Whenever someone needed to show up. Magic! There they were. It ruined Spock. It just didn't seem like Star Trek to me. I don't want to go into to much detail since I don't want to spoil things for people.

Yeah, I saw it...that is to say I seen it. Very good movie. I am not a Star Trek fan in the least, but I found myself very much into this film. I was never bored and it passed the old ass numbness test. I was never once aware of the time and how much of it had passed.

Best Star Trek movie since First Contact. To be fair, that isn't really saying much. There were only two movies in between the two, and both weren't good. I actually think Insurrection's the worst Trek film of the entire lot. Nemesis could've been pretty good if it didn't have a character death for the sake of a character death. Well, that and if it didn't try so hard to be Wrath of Khan for the TNG crew. It was a really excretory matterty "last movie" that didn't close out the Next Gen crew with a happy ending. But it might've been all right if there was a "Search for Spock" analog that ended that particular chapter on a happy note. Still, Star Trek XI was really freakin' good.

Star Trek's "core" fanbase is increasingly small and inaccessible, and became infatuated with increasingly cerebral storylines that went over the head of 95% of its potential audience. If you lookat the 1960s show, most of the episodes are tightly scripted and accessible, which is why people remember them best. By Voyager and DS9, I had trouble following what was going on half the time. Enterprise showed promise when it introduced the Xindi storyline but chose a really STUPID final episode that (SPOILERS)
basically retconned the entire show out of existence.
As for the movies, the "even=good" rule pretty much ended with the TNG movies. The only TNG movie I thought was genuinely good was First Contact, it had the Borg (my favorite TNG storyline) and good use of all characters. The rest of the TNG movies seemed like 2-part episodes of the TV show. Nemesis MIGHT have been good if they hadn't so overtly cloned the Wrath of Khan script.
In short, if this movie is done in the style of GOOD Star Trek, I don't care about the recasts. Its almost impossible to imagine something that will make me as P.O.'d as the Enterprise final ep "twist".

I didn't interpret Enterprise's finale as retconning the entire series out of existence AT ALL. It was only the specific signing of the Federation charter and all that was simulated in the Holodeck, not the entire series. If anything, it solidified just how important the NX-01 and its crew were in the Trek mythos. Hell, Archer even went on to become one of the Federation's first presidents.

That interpretation makes alot of sense. I'm just frustrated with Enterprise because it had a relatively short run and was cancelled when it was getting good.

Just saw with the wife in IMAX and throughly enjoyed it. Although it was slightly spoilt by losers giving the Vulcan Hand gesture at the screen several times. They even stood up and did it.
