I read how Silverchair is HUGE in Australia, or something along those lines. And they've never really made much noise here in the States. What are some other bands like that?

Dire Straits or anything after that which Mark Knopfler has done. Extremely talented musician, but he's just never been that popular in the United States. And frankly I'm not even quite sure why.

Ben Folds. Yes, he's gotten pretty "over" in the US, but from everything I've heard, read, and what he's said in interviews, the man is pretty much treated like a musical god in Japan.

Considering we in Australia launched him we would like to apologise for that To keep it topical. Hunters and Collectors were one of Australia's biggest bands in the 80's-90's but they never really made a dent in the U.S Market. If you wanted something more recent. Kylie Minogue comes immediately to mind, bar one brief moment of levity in 2000 or so she's tried for 20 years and got nothing

Madness had numerous two-tone/ska hits in the UK and continental Europe over the past 30 years. Here they're known as that bad that did Our House.

Björk was pretty huge in Europe and Japan in the mid 90s. While she has her fans in the US I guess most people over there wouldn't know her if it wasn't for her swan dress at the 2001 Oscars.

It seems the Pixies were more popular in the UK than they were here, despite being an american band.

Muse were (don't know about now).
After the last album they played two sell out shows at Wembley Stadium in England, co-headlined the 2007 Australian Big Day Out music festival with Tool and they returned later in the year to do a successful arena tour.
Meanwhile the best they could do in the U.S during this period was opening for My Chemical Romance during MCR's U.S tour.

Considering we in Australia launched him we would like to apologise for that Why apologize? He's one of the most talented musicians in modern history. The things he can do on the piano seriously are mind-blowing. And yeah, totally agree with Pixies. Just had this same conversation with a girl(more details in another thread floating around page 2). So many people name drop them, but when you actually ask them about their songs, most "fans" will say "Yeah, that one song at the end of Fight Club is pretty cool*" *note: not saying people who like that song are bad people, but knowing/liking one song doesn't make you a fan of the band, IMO(especially, considering, IMO, "Where is My Mind?" is one of Pixie's more average songs).

Although relatively young as a band, Alter Bridge is hugely over in Europe while having a very hard time cracking through the glass ceiling in the US. Over here, the general consensus about Alter Bridge is either "Who?" or "Oh, they're members of Creed? That must mean they suck, so no thank you."

the New York Dolls. The press loved them, the public hated them. Their music didn't ever really translate out of New York, especially with their look.
Ironically, if you trace it back thru lineage, almost everyone has ripped off something off the Dolls.

Whoever said the Super Furrys gets a massive round of applause from me.
Early/mid 90s - SUEDE. Hell even Lars from Mettalica said he was a fan of them! But a dispute over their name (some country singer had the name in the US, so they had to be called The London Suede) and just general "what the hell?!" reactions meant it'd never work out.
Also, Manic Street Preachers, albeit on the album that was said to be getting "college radio" (The Holy Bible) exposure in the US, their rhythm guitarist/lyricist Richey Edwards went missing (now legally declared dead but no one knows), literally on the day the bands singer/lead guitarist James Dean Bradfield and him were due to fly out for promotion...BAD TIMING YOU MENTALLY ILL BASTARD!

ManOwar was never as big here as they were in Europe. They still tour in Europe my brother in law got nagged into not seeing them while he was stationed in Germany a few years back. My sister's excuse to why he couldn't go was he literally BUMPED into King Diamond sans makeup and had a chat with him. And unless I'm completely wrong Chumbawumba was popular in the UK as an underground punk band and over here they were a pop one hit wonder. Creepy Crawley and Mary Mary are pretty good songs actually.
