And unless I'm completely wrong Chumbawumba was popular in the UK as an underground punk band and over here they were a pop one hit wonder. Creepy Crawley and Mary Mary are pretty good songs actually.

Muse were (don't know about now). After the last album they played two sell out shows at Wembley Stadium in England, co-headlined the 2007 Australian Big Day Out music festival with Tool and they returned later in the year to do a successful arena tour. Meanwhile the best they could do in the U.S during this period was opening for My Chemical Romance during MCR's U.S tour. Muse had a sell out concert at MSG not too long ago. They're pretty big in the US now. The Killers not too long ago were bitching how they're not huge in the States when they are massively popular in the UK. And Kings of Leon weren't over in the States, but got huge in the UK, and now are huge in the States. And to the poster above Chumbawumba had one hit single here and that's it.

I don't think Pulp, the stone roses or Blur did well in America. It's a shame as a Different Class (Pulp) is one of my favourite albums.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot Robbie Williams. He made a valiant attempt a decade ago, trying to ride the coattails of the pop renaissance in the US, but his whole self-deprecating thing didn't register.

I'd put the Stone Roses on this list. They had one single played on the radio in the mid-90s but that's it. Meanwhile, they were huge in Europe.

Aren't The Living End huge in Australia too, but more underground elsewhere?

How about Iron Maiden. I mean they headline and sell out stadiums throughout the world and in the US they do not. Pretty sure they've never had plantium or gold albums in the US either and they have done that in many other countries Im sure.

If you wanted something more recent. Kylie Minogue comes immediately to mind, bar one brief moment of levity in 2000 or so she's tried for 20 years and got nothing There are days where I envy the United States for that.

"Number of the Beast", "Piece of Mind" and "Powerslave" all at least were registered gold at some point in the early/mid 80's.

Slade only had one big hit in America, and unless you really looked, you'd never known how big they were in the UK, or they had a movie and several albums.
I notice that in other countries, that age doesn't really matter much, if you first hit it big in the 50's, 60's or whenever, you can still be a pretty big name, like Cliff Richard, who was mentioned earlier

All I can remember is them playing arenas or amphitheaters.

T-Rex was a very popular band in England but in the US they only had one hit.
This song is awesome by the way.

Nightwish has their U.S. fans, but they are absolutely monstrously huge in Europe, whereas in the U.S. they're relegated to playing nightclubs and smaller venues.

The Tragically Hip are huge enough in Canada to play arenas, yet in the US they can do no better than a bar/concert venue that holds a few hundred a few blocks from me (and even then the crowds are largely made up of Canadians).
She also had a hit in 1988 with a cover of the Locomotion. Only this month did she announce she's performing her first North American concerts ever, and they're not even going to be in arenas. Weird how she's not big here, because she's friggin huge elsewhere around the world.
And Iron Maiden did sell out Madison Square Garden last year, so take that for what it's worth.

didn it take Oasis ages?
Chumbawumba have never been that popular here.
Have The Dandy Warhols been as big in the US as in UK/Japan?
I'm not sure, but i think The National might be a lot bigger in the UK too.
