I thought it was cool a while back when actual recording artists did entrance themes for wrestlers. Now all we have left is Alter Bridge for Edge, Three 6 Mafia for Mark Henry, and Motorhead for HHH. So, wouldn't it be in the best interests of both the record labels and the WWE to collaborate again? I'd love to see Ricky Ortiz come out to Funk Soul Bro again, or Finlay to come out to anything by Dropkick Murphys. Cody Rhodes could use I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness again, since Shawn Spears is gone. I need ideas for entrance themes. Go Crappers!

WWE don't want to spend money every time it appears on a DVD (or pay to edit it), I'm sure they'd like to but it's easier to use their own music.

Because it probably doesn't really matter to Vince so he'll pick up songs and drop them when feels like it.
Really, if the potential income gained by WWE by paying for a 'name' song for a wrestler is not greater than the cost of licensing the song, then why bother, from his perspective? It can also make DVDs a pain in the ass when rights expire.

WWE will generally not take an existing song and give it to a wrestler though. Most of these songs were written by WWE, and simply performed by a known artist, so they hold rights to them. In OVW they didn't have to worry about paying royalties or anything, since it was just a low budget tv show and nothing else. So guys came out to whatever song they wanted. If WWE did that, they'd have to edit these songs out of any DVD or work out a deal for each song, or a probably pretty expensive deal for rights to use a catalog of songs. Also for PPVs WWE tends to try and get bands to donate the music, saying it's good publicity for their upcoming album. That works cause WWE does plug it every show and you can time it around a release. Can't really do that with entrance music. |

Frankly I miss when wrestlers had original themes that were written specifically for them. Now you can pretty much interchange most guys themes.

Well, I don't know if that's a special case but generally if a musical act chooses to perform a song written by somebody else at a concert I'm almost certain they don't pay royalties. Unless, it's Happy Birthday I guess. |

I don't really want wrestlers to come out to songs from any bands/artists. I think for the most part the WWE music guys do a VERY good job making songs for each wrestler and there are very few themes I don't like. Sure it would be nice to have one or two themes be from a famous band but I think that would just make it more likely for the song to get on my nerves if I hear it in a bar then on RAW.
Also, it's not just Vince's decision. There will be plenty of people advising him, particularly when it comes to music and the like.

It's annoying as hell watching old footage and having music I loved get edited out (case in point: Sting's "Seek and Destroy" theme by Metallica in WCW is usually edited out with friggin Mike Knox's theme. Seriously?) Plus no more rock concerts at Mania. Ever. |
