since comic con is happening now I've been seeing a lot of movie sites get really worked up on james cameron's new 3D opus "Avatar" and I want to be hyped up with them.
There's a problem however, in that I saw James Cameron speak for 40 minutes non-effing-stop at the ubisoft press conference during E3 and that destroyed any and all enthusiasm I had for this film.
I don't want to be a skeptic but... damnit if you want to torture yourself watch this!
yes I know the actual video is only 14 minutes, but trust me it feels like he's going on forever.

Truth be told, it was because of this and the painful embarrassment of seeing Pele try to stall for time that Ubisoft beat out Nintendo for worse press conference.
If it wasn't for Red Steel 2 and Assassin's Creed 2, Ubisoft's presser would've been a complete and utter waste of time.

So, is this game about a bald kid with powers over air fighting big headed aliens and robots from the future trying to kill his mother?

So are we getting a trailer or footage any time soon or anything? Dunno. That's one reasons why GameTrailers called this the Most Embarrassing Moment of E3 2009. They say, "He continues to talk, and talk, and talk, without so much as a screenshot or a trailer to reward us."(Not a direct quote, just getting their point across)

Rumor is this was an active attempt to try and dial back the hype on the movie, which (at that time) was getting out of control. It's leveled off a bit since then (so I guess this worked?), but there are people that have been talking like this thing will cure cancer and supposedly Cameron wanted to put the kibosh on it because he knew it was a road that led to disappointment.

Apparently, on August 21st a bunch of Imaxes are gonna show 15 minutes of Avatar for free.
Sounds cool.

I read a footage report from Comic-Con that basically said "Looks really good, but not nearly as great as advertised."

I read a footage report from Comic-Con that basically said "Looks really good, but not nearly as great as advertised." I also read a lot of reports that said this movie is the next coming of christ so who knows. But I don't buy the "this was a way to control the hype" argument. Why would you want to control hype? Hype leads to bigger box office returns, it makes no sense to do something and ruin it.

Everyone has an off day, so I'll give Cameron some slack on this. I'll wait and see the movie - I'm still pumped for it. It's supposed to be incredible and he usually makes kick ass movies (even his documentaries are awesome) so I'll still hope.

I also read a lot of reports that said this movie is the next coming of christ so who knows. I don't know about that. The one I read said that while it was clearly a technological step forward, it was by no means the leap that had been promised. They likened they footage they saw to a CGI cartoon. A very, very good one, but one that still looked CGI. And the plot sounds pretty by the numbers. I'm dialing back the anticipation for this one.

I don't understand why a bad speech at E3 has any effect on wanting to see a movie.

I don't understand why a bad speech at E3 has any effect on wanting to see a movie. Cameron had been using ever chance available to tell anyone that listen about how Avatar would redefine the way we watch movies. Then he gets on a tech-friendly platform and gives...that. He was wildly expected to do the biggest sell job up until that point. It took everyone by surprise, and not in a good way.

I don't understand why a bad speech at E3 has any effect on wanting to see a movie. because, if he wanted to go out there and talk about the movie then it's his job making me interested in seeing it. I'm not saying that his speech at E3 is going to effect everyone, or even hardcore movie geeks, but it effected me in a very negative way.

First I've heard of the movie by reading this thread. I saw the teaser trailer. I mean...I'll wait until the trailer to see whether or not I'll see it, but the premise looks interesting.
