Anyone ever see that (unlicensed) strip that had Calvin's parents give him some pills, and Hobbes didn't talk anymore? I always liked this better... That's awesome.

... How do you get away with that? Does Bill Watterson live in an underground bunker?

But if there is a motif, such as complex snow sculpture and a mundane response thereto by adults, wouldn't that itself become a normal trope, beyond the perspectives established in more common motifs? But you have to remember, he was doing those snow sculptures ALL the time, even the grand becomes mundane if its common. My point was that the snow sculptures are common enough that they can be read within a context-specific framework like the one I suggested. I understand why most choose to look at the snow art as true representation contrasted with an oddly underwhelming adult response. But it is exactly this perspective and response that I see as a motif unique to Calvin's artistic creations. Perhaps there is something to the liminal space between domestic (home) and wild (fantastic worlds, as the real "wild" is too powerful and dynamic a force for a little boy) that the snow sculptures represent. Calvin attempts to create order in this outside yet close-to-home space, as evidenced by the complexity of the depictions of his snow sculptures. But the response to these, be it apathy or understatement, may inform our reading. In this space that, for a child, is neither domestic nor wild, Calvin's perspective and that of objective reality clash. Thus we are granted a view of adults responding objectively to a purely subjective depiction of the world. Consider the way in which pointilist and impressionist artwork loses structure when seen from close by. It only gains objective meaning when seen from a proper distance and with an observant eye. When a parent, for whom this space is purely domestic, observes the child's sculpture, they have long ago lost the ability to assume the proper perspective, a perspective that we as readers of "Calvin and Hobbes" who are attached to Calvin as protagonist are privileged to see.

You ever wonder about this one? I never did decide if Hobbes was real or not, I mean, hes a stuffed animal, but then he does something like tackling Calvin.

The snowman comics are so awesome, by far my favorites of the Calvin and Hobbes series!
The only cartoon that could probably surpass this, IMO, is Farside!

I always wanted to know how the story went when Calvin's dad got mad and the strip ended with Calvin wondering if the villagers ever found Huey's head.

I liked that movie they made where Hobbes turned into Brad Pitt and became a cultish terrorist, while Calvin was all weird and delusional and eventually shot himself in the head but survived and hooked up with Bellatrix LeStrange.
