Am I the only one who finds it odd that Sheamus and Finlay are now both on ECW? It kind of surprises me that WWE is OK with two guys in the company both essentially having the same gimmick of "being Irish," let alone having them both on the same show.

Finlay is on Smackdown now.
It'll work out fine.

Finlay's on SmackDown now with the trade on Monday, I thought.

Finlay's gimmick is that he "loves to fight." Being Irish is just incidental to his character.
Sheamus on the other hand appears to be a traditional foreigner gimmick.

OK, you guys are right about Finlay moving to Smackdown. I forgot that, and Regal just moved to ECW and I get the two of them mixed up for some reason. That being said, the fact remains that they both have pretty much the same gimmick. Does anybody see this as a potential problem? Are they figuring that if Sheamus gets really over, Finlay will be ready to retire by then?

OK, maybe you're right. I may be getting Finlay and Regal mixed up. That being said, the fact remains that they both have pretty much the same gimmick. Does anybody see this as a potential problem? Are they figuring that if Sheamus gets really over, Finlay will be ready to retire by then? I think with one match and 40 seconds of promo under Sheamus belt, it's difficult to tell. If Sheamus ends up some uber-Irish nationalist who talks down on the fans, his gimmick will be completely different than Finlay's. Honestly, Finlay's gimmick has little to do with being Irish anyway these days. He has his own character now, rather than being a "mere" gimmick. They're not even from the same country anyway. Even in kayfabe.

It's the name of the country he's from Because his gimmick is (was?) being hardcore Irish, and exactly how Irish Northern Ireland is has been the subject of decades of bloody dispute.

By virtue of the Good Friday agreement, Finlay (from Northern Ireland) can choose to be of irish nationality. As this is kind of a political issue, I'll say no more.

But it seems like it would have been easier to just bill him from just plain Ireland and avoid the possible controversy. But maybe he wanted to be billed from Belfast, so whatever.

What if he was an an Ulster Protestant how insulting would that have been to him to say he was from the South.

Can I request a moratorium on this potentially sticky situation? It's not really an issue unless WWE make it one anyway.

This. Nevermind that there's several guys that come in from Canada or elsewhere in the country, but it's overload for two Irish guys to be in the same company? Tell me, then, is it annoying that three Brits in Regal, Katie lea, and Paul Burchill are on Smackdown?

Nevermind that there's several guys that come in from Canada or elsewhere in the country But none have "being Canadian" as their gimmick. Regal just moved to ECW, and none of those three have done much of anything recently. And I never said I was annoyed. All I said was that it seemed odd to me that WWE would want two guys with such similar niche gimmicks.

I wish one of them would have the opening to Korn's "Shoots and Ladders" as their theme.
