1 million prawns with guns that make people explode, Ed109 robots and bomb making abilities - I'm pretty sure they could make us all into cat food. They said in the movie that they were pretty much all scared and unable to use the weaponry because they didn't have a leader and were unintelligent. I personally thought it was a big plothole myself. It was a great movie, had a ton of plotholes but the acting and writing more than made up for it. The only downside is this movie will make you feel really bad for humanity because it's exactly how we would treat an alien race.

Another thing I'd like to know is why exactly the chemicals caused the guy to turn into an alien in the first place. As far as I could tell, that substance was only fuel for the ship. It was highly concentrated biofuel, so I guess it could have some biological effects. Here's Neill Blomkamp talking about the Prawn's back story. io9.com/5331799/district-9s-director-tells-us-all-about-his-alien-back-story

GREAT GREAT GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!! Yes, it was slow in the beginning. But things really picked up about a third of the way in. And I love how it ended. I'm tired of Hollywood spoonfeeding the audience, and Peter Jackson did a great job of wrapping things up. Also, I've never heard a character in any move say F*** as much as this guy. They loved the F word in that movie. I mean, even the main alien said it a time or two.

I think the real question is why didn't they just kill all the humans. 1 million prawns with guns that make people explode, Ed109 robots and bomb making abilities - I'm pretty sure they could make us all into cat food. Spoilers Ahoy! The issue was, all of the Prawns on Earth have almost no higher-reasoning functions. They're drones that take orders from a higher command chain (which would probably be Christopher Johnson), and my guess is, most of the leaders of the expedition either died when they came to Earth, or Johnson was the only one in charge of the ship. It's really unknown what happened to cause this. Most of the Prawns probably didn't really understand what the weapons were without orders, only that the humans wanted them, and would give them stuff for it.

I went in seeing this, having never heard of it, with no expectations, and was... pleasantly surprised. I was very surprised to hear how low the budget was, but, as someone slightly squeamish, there was a bit too much gore in the start to me. I guess I'm weird, fingers peeling away sickens me, but an expanding canister blowing a guys head up is funny to me.
My only real complaint for the moment is: Damn the cliche of the smart child figuring stuff out, in regards to the little alien putting the motions for everything to get fixed in the end, after Christopher always tells him to stop playing with things.

I thought it was okay but I'm afraid it is going to be hugely overrated as a classic. It was totally a good new original sci fi movie but I just couldn't help but feel that they could have done a little better some how. I can't figure it out but it just seems like it was missing something.
I loved how they didn't use any big actors though. It made it pretty realistic.
Does it rank up their with Alien and other sci fi classics? I don't think so. It seemed like half the movie was very serious but part of it gave me a Independence Day vibe. Independence Day was serious in some parts but like this movie became in the second half it was a little over the top.
the parts where they break into the place and then the part where he got into the big robot thing just seemed really forced for some reason.

I understand what you're saying. What science fiction movie would be complete without a science lab being raided, or a final battle between aliens and humans? Although it was fun to watch, I'll admit it was cliche until the end when:
SPOILERS AHOY:
We're led to believe that the main character continued with his transformation and turned into a Prawn. There was no happy ending with him being cured and the aliens leaving. Instead, he became one and they all ended up staying on Earth.

I didn't even realize how cliche the raid on the lab was until you just pointed that out. I was thinking more in just how easily they did it but I guess that has been done in a few sci fi movies before. For some reason I'm thinking they will do a sequel although I don't know how well that would work. They left it right open for one but I don't know.

Ya know what...screw the Halo movie Neill was supposed to do. This man needs to lens the Fallout movie. Immediately. THIS! THIS! THIS! I'd rather see Fallout 3 then a bastardized Starship Troopers re-imagined by a group of 13 year old boys hopped up on redbull. I doubt it would hold a candle to Road Warrior (One of my all time faves by the way), but still, I would rather have that then Halo.

When exactly did Halo start to get heat with gamers? When the whiny Halo Nerds took over the online competitive game?

I am skipping 3 pages of complimentary reactions that i already knew i'd see to also throw in my utter praise for this film. it was almost a social commentary as much as it was a badass action film.
Also, I know for certain that if they made this into a video game, it would be awesome.

That's why there's the scene where the Prawns are trying to deal a Mech suit...A VERY POWERFUL WEAPON, mind you...for a 1000 cans of cat food...only to have the Nigerian overlord say he'll sell them a 100...and they take it. Immediately. No bartering whatsoever. And then they're killed anyways. The Prawns are capable of mimicking human nature, human behavior, but they have no ability to say "Screw this, we have powerful weapons, let's waste them!"

Saw this today. It was okay. 6/10 I suppose.
I actually enjoyed the documentary at the beginning more than the action plot. I think the movie would have been better if it was either 100% documentary style or 100% straight action/alien narrative. By putting the two together, the plot kind of unravels in the middle and the movie only picks up because of the action at the end than any sort of logical conclusion (or a conclusion that sent me home happy, rather than "eh").

I loved this movie. Loved it like crazy. Two great sci-fi films for me this year in this and Star Trek. I'll definatly pick this up on Blu-Ray.
As for some influences I noticed in this film, I saw a little bit of The Fly (Cronenberg) and Iron Man.
