The Dawn of the dead remake is one of my favorite movies ever. Great film, but let down by running zombies That actually made it better IMO. Slow Zombies are not scary in the least.

The Blob remake completely destroys the original. The original is corny, cheesy and bad. The remake takes a bad concept and improves it.

Akira/Ghost in the Shell > The Matrix movies .....Ok, not a remake, but the inspiration is better than the product Um, Akira and Ghost in the Shell were made before Matrix. Or am I misunderstanding you? I actually perfer Night of the Living Dead 89 to the original. However, it had a lot of the same crew... I know there were late 80's/early 90's respectively, I just went abit offtopic for a moment by saying I much prefer these inspiring the Matrix, rather than the Matrix franchise themselves

/\ I dunno, man. there might be a few similar themes, but it's a real stretch to say that The Matrix ripped off either of those 2 films. Grant Morrison's Invisibles comic on the other hand...

Im not saying it ripped them off, just that it took some ideas. Does Aliens > Alien count btw? Sequel rather than Remake obviously.

I liked the more recent Planet of the Apes than I did the original, which had always bored me.
I kinda doubt many people 'round these parts would agree with me on it being better, though.

Isn't The 80s thing more of a semi-squeal then a remake of the original?

Most are not even close, but there are a few (namely John Carpenter's The Thing)

There are only like 5 original movies ever made, and those came out in like 1910, they've been remaking them ever since.
