Here's something I've been wondering a bit lately, especially with all the news of these movie remakes getting greenlighted: Are there any remakes that are better than the original version? And I'm not talking about the elitists who automatically think that the remake will suck before giving it a chance. Of course, I'm guilty of that at times but I will admit to liking a few remakes. For example, I enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake and thought the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was decent as well. But would I say they were better than the originals? No. The only one I could think of would maybe be Scarface, but considering all the differences between the original movie and the Al Pacino movie, they could possibly be judged as two different movies. Not to mention I haven't even seen the original so it would be unfair for me to choose one over the other.
Which yields another question: If remakes are rarely, if ever, better than the originals, then why remake them? Of course, there's the old standby argument of "Hollywood ran out of original ideas" but still, if there's one movie out there, why have another copy of it? It runs the risk of not only being not as good, but cheapening the allure of the original as well.

I prefer I Am Legend to the original, and the original remake.

Ocean's Eleven is far superior to the rat pack original. The original was just Sinatra and his buddies walking around trying to look cool. (which incidentally, the Clooney mob did in Ocean's Twelve).
I also prefer the Italian Job remake. I think the original isn't that great except for the last 20 minutes. The remake may not have a better ending but the rest of the film is far more interesting than the original.

Carpenter's Thing and Cronenberg's Fly are textbook examples of how to remake a movie. Both are LOADS better than the original films.

I echo everyone saying "The Thing". Ended up being one of my favorite movies of all time.

A Fistful of Dollars is quite a different movie from it's original, but still a great film.
As for the other question, why remake them? There are several reasons. There might be a different, novel way to tell a familiar story (like they could have done with Psycho), or the older version might have been more dated than other films for various reasons, and could be updated for a new generation.
Oh yeah, they also have the potential to make boatloads upon boatloads of moolah.

Litttle Shop of Horrors Cape Fear Yea, but supposedly the original Little Shop Of Horrors was made in less then 24 hours. And the original had Jack Nicklaus in it. I think the reason so many remakes are made is just because Hollywood is out of original ideas. If you take away all the Sequels, Remakes (including remakes of foreign films) and movies based on Comics/Books or TV shows you'd have almost no movies.

The Fly. I found the original dull but loved the Goldblum version.

Would this include "re-imagining" or re-boots.
Like Batman or Superman of the last few years?
I prefer BaleBat series over first 4 films, though I love the Micheal Keaton ones.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION BELOW:
The Longest Yard.
I watched the original after seeing the remake, and I found it too slow and a little too dialogue heavy. Overall, the remake was much more interesting.

Not a fan of the remake, but the 1980's Scarface is better then the first one.
And as someone who likes both, The remake of Wizzard of Oz is better then the 1910 one.

All Along the Watchtower
Jimi's remake is way better than the original.
