I don't see why JRPG fans have to hate WRPGs, and vice versa. I mean, I'm primarily into JRPGs, they're my favourite genre...but I can get into WRPGs too. It just seems silly. They're both diverse genres with a lot to offer. But getting along is way too much to ask, right? We have to hate everything. I love both genres, so I'm definitely with you here. Also, just remembered another WRPG that doesn't use a generic fantasy setting: Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden. ;D

No, we just all have different tastes. I don't get why it's such an alien thing for people to dislike different things. We're all different and we all like different things...and frankly, that's a good thing or else these boards and the real world would be REALLY boring... It's not that. I can understand disliking something, it's when people outright hate a genre and insult any fans of said genre is more what I'm talking about. When people start stereotyping every single game in a given genre, etc. Yes, it's definitely a good thing that we all have different tastes, and I have nothing against people who like something I dislike or vice versa. It's just when people get like really stupid mad and defensive about it...I think that's silly. Oh...well yeah, those people are dumb. ;D

Never got the polarization myself. I'm the kinda guy who can waste hours on a Final Fantasy game or a Bethesda game.
Can't we all just get along?

Unfortunately, neither RPG genre is doing well on most consoles.

That's a beggar's lineup in comparison to the SNES/PS1 days. The games you mentioned are high quality but seriously, that's only 4 entries. How many FPS' have been issued in the same time? I think RPGs have been left behind in the drive for graphics-driven blockbusters.

Dont mind Fable 2 (which I forgot to mention earlier)....but really not a fan. So, I'll take your word on this.

The RPG still seems to reign supreme on the DS.

Honestly, the main thing I'm tired of with JRPGs, is the whole "Anybody older than 25 needs to get the hell out of the way and make room for the kids!" theme that tends to run through the majority of them.

I mean think about it, how many western RPGs are set in tolkeinisa where you're the stalwart hero of the land who comes to save the kingdom from demons who've run amuck. The only western RPG I can think of that isn't like that is fallout, practically everything else is elves and gnomes fighting imps and dragons. It's funny how you can criticize generalization of JRPG's when you do it for WRPG's. Also, besides Fallout, there's Mass Effect, both Star Wars: KOTOR's, Deus Ex (which is also FPS, but there's definitely RPG elements), Septerra Core, Alpha Protocol, Jade Empire, Planescape: Torment and many others that differ from your typical Tolkien-esque fantasy setting. you know what's funny after I made that list I remembered all of those, yet I still think my point still stands. because here's a list of WRPGs with tolkein-esque flavor to them: wizardry 1-8, the entire ultima series, sacred 1 and 2, diablo series, baldurs gate series, dragon age orgins, arcanum, neverwinter nights series, that game john carmack made for cellphones, elder scrolls series, might and magic series, a bard's tale, king's quest, all the gold box games, etc. the point is, while there are some exception (you even forgot to list vampire the masquerade) western RPGs are just usually about the stalwart hero of the land rescuing a town from demons and dragons. And while Bioware does deviate from that, not that many other people do. And for the record, I actually don't hate western RPGs I just hate that they constantly re-use the same setting over and over.
