I'm not a big RPG person, I mostly played old ones when both west and JRPGs were called RPGs. Is the Legend of Zelda an RPG? Speaking of which, why hasn't nobody made a RPG based on Snoopy? I WANT MY PEANUTS RPG!!!! There were Disney characters in an RPG, so I don't see why Peanuts can't have their own. What I want to know is, where are the Looney Tunes RPGs? Where's their equivalent to Kingdom Hearts? Or perhaps their own stand alone title? |

I prefer adventure games like Zelda and Okami myself. Less micro-management, more gameplaying and story. The only game I ever really liked that had trace elements of an RPG was Deus Ex.

Anyone here play Rune Factory? Animal Crossing+D&D+Dating Sim=Awesome in my book. Rune Factory is awesome. It was the perfect way to revitalize the Harvest Moon series, which had pretty much become a bit boring after the N64 era. |

Dating Sims are not popular in the west, at all. My guess is that, culturally speaking, they would not translate well. At all.

I LOVE adventure-RPG's like Zelda, but in talking about JRPG's, I don't know. I guess I have a soft spot for some of them, but I can only deal with a few of them in a given console generation.
My issues tend to revolve around too many repetitive aspects of them, such as too many repeated storylines or repeated character types. There's also the fact that most of them have given up on attempting to be difficult, which is too bad.
Again, that doesn't mean I hate them all; three of my favorite games for GameCube were Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, and one of my absolute favorites, Skies of Arcadia (I LOVED the exploration elements). All qualify, I would think, as JRPG's, though Baten Kaitos and Tales had unique gameplay features to distinguish themselves.

All three of those are definitely RPG's. It's funny how you can criticize generalization of JRPG's when you do it for WRPG's. Also, besides Fallout, there's Mass Effect, both Star Wars: KOTOR's, Deus Ex (which is also FPS, but there's definitely RPG elements), Septerra Core, Alpha Protocol, Jade Empire, Planescape: Torment and many others that differ from your typical Tolkien-esque fantasy setting. you know what's funny after I made that list I remembered all of those, yet I still think my point still stands. because here's a list of WRPGs with tolkein-esque flavor to them: wizardry 1-8, the entire ultima series, sacred 1 and 2, diablo series, baldurs gate series, dragon age orgins, arcanum, neverwinter nights series, that game john carmack made for cellphones, elder scrolls series, might and magic series, a bard's tale, king's quest, all the gold box games, etc. the point is, while there are some exception (you even forgot to list vampire the masquerade) western RPGs are just usually about the stalwart hero of the land rescuing a town from demons and dragons. And while Bioware does deviate from that, not that many other people do. And for the record, I actually don't hate western RPGs I just hate that they constantly re-use the same setting over and over. First of all, while a lot of those games share common elements in their settings, they VASTLY differ in tone, especially from Tolkien. And most JRPG's also use similar settings (more straight medieval fantasy in the 16-bit days; the anime-style mix of high fantasy and sci-fi in 32-bit and last couple of gens), character archetypes, and plot cliches and tropes (I can't even begin to count how many JRPG's I've played whose story can be summed up as "Young Man with a Strong Sense of Justice Comes of Age While Saving the World"). Both types of RPG have this generalization to them because it's mostly true. But it's the exceptions to the rule that stand out to most fans of both types. It's the things that stand out that turn a mediocre game into a great one (or a terrible one, if it's the wrong things that stand out). Again, I really enjoy both JRPG and WRPG. I just find it highly amusing that you're lamenting how WRPG fans unfairly generalize JRPG's... and then do the same exact thing to WRPG's. |

re: WRPG: Well, maybe because Western gamers like playing games set in that epoch. I mean, the Tolkien/D&D formula is very successful, it's our cultural heritage going back a thousand years, and many elements about it just don't translate very well. It's like how FPS are either Aliens or Nazi shooters. The formula of killing stuff doesn't translate well to other settings. I mean, the other popular formula is Star Wars, what does that tell you? Star Wars is basically Fantasy, in a science fiction garb. Two, RPGs just don't fill as much of the American Gamer's diet as they do in Japan.
