well with two months left in 2009 I figure it's appropriate to figure out what musical act best fit this decade.
just as a general basis, here's what me and my bass teacher came up with for musical acts of the 1960's to 90's
1960: the beatles 1970: led zepplin 1980: bruce springstein (I disagree, I think def leppard is a better fit) 1990: nirvana
so what in your opinion is the musical act for the 00's? I'm going to go with kanye west because despite the giant backlash he's accumulated after acting like an idiot, he truly was one of the most important musical acts of the decade. His albums were INSANELY popular with the youth and he kept that momentum going through out the entire decade.

I vote Green Day......they altered their act from being poppy punks to one of the biggest bands in the world.

Kanye West. not only is he the voice of his generation, but he means more to music than The Beatles, Elvis and Les Paul combined, and is so respected he transcends the music industry to where he could go back in time to the 2007 Academy Awards and interrupt Martin Scorsese's acceptance speech to say that Clint Eastwood is the greatest of all time and should have won.

I vote Green Day......they altered their act from being poppy punks to one of the biggest bands in the world. but the thing with green day is that I always associate them with dookie which came out in the 90's. I know american idiot is popular and all but I just can't help but think of them as the band that recorded dookie.

Honestly I'd say Backstreet Boys or N Sync for the 90s, they paved the way for crappy singing but decent dancin pop acts that plague us to this day. Nirvana didn't even make it halfway through the decade.
And Michael Jackson for the 80s.
As for now, as much as it hurts to say... Beyonce. She has consistently been at the top this entire decade.

I agree with Beyonce, but if your talking rock music I would say..........Tool. Every band in the last ten years wishes they were Tool.

Britney Spears
Between the infectious pop music to all the crazy tabloid crap she's done to stay in the spotlight, Britney epitomized what this decade was all about.
PS - If Kanye West is truly the "voice of our generation", I will gladly donate my throat to a pack of rabid wolves. Despite all the stupid shit and unnecessary boasting he's done outside of music, his music is only marginally better than the "bitches and money" stereotype that permeates hip-hop. I don't consider myself to be a hip-hop fan but anyone who does is truly doing themselves a disservice by just listening to stuff like Kanye or anything else on mainstream radio. Sorry for the rant but I just don't see how a guy who's only kinda-good and only was around the past couple years should even be in contention for a definitive musical act of the decade, when his antics will probably insure that he won't be around beyond the next couple years.

Let's look at the top 20 artists in terms of U.S. album sales since the first week of January 2000 (as of earlier this year): Eminem; The Beatles; Tim McGraw; Toby Keith; Britney Spears; Kenny Chesney; Nelly; Linkin Park; Creed; Jay-Z; Nickelback; Josh Groban; Rascal Flatts; Metallica; Alan Jackson; *NSYNC; Dixie Chicks; Johnny Cash; Kid Rock; Celine Dion. SourceKanye is right around 10 million total albums sold in the U.S. (four albums), which would put him about 700,000 behind Kid Rock. Excluding their 2001 greatest hits album, Green Day went 5x platinum with "AI," while both "Warning" and their most recent effort only went gold. Beyonce's 3 solo studio albums each hit #1 on the U.S. charts and have went platinum a combined 9 times. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood went to #1 with each of her two albums and is expected to do the same with her forthcoming third (out the week of Thanksgiving/Black Friday); her debut has sold more than 7 million copies in the U.S. Honestly, the only reason most people are aware of Kanye are his controversies, not his artistry. Now, most people of a certain age group would recognize his music. And most people who like his genre would know his style. I think there are more female acts on the short list than males: Carrie Underwood Taylor Swift Eminem That's my short list. People just about everyone who listens to a radio would know not only as a "name," but also their music. Both female country acts have crossed over big-time into the pop top-40. New rock groups are filling a niche as opposed to challenging the 15-50-year vets. Eminem, controversial as he is, had huge effects on hip hop and music culture this decade. Beyonce's a late cut. So are Kenny and Kanye. Green Day, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, and Johnny Cash all made huge impressions at certain points, ones that will be part of any "remember the 00's retrospective" show on VH1.

Personally it's pretty much just Muse as I got into them in 2000 and still like them now.
On a wider scale it's hard to tell, there's not really been one big act like the ones in the OP. Most successful ones will still be around for a while or were big in the 90s. I think Eminem is the closest I can think of.

I don't know honestly, maybe Eminem.
Over in the UK I may have to say The Killers.
Worldwide? I have no idea.

I change my opinion on the 90s. I was just listening to NPR, and it has to be Garth Brooks.
Highest selling artist of the decade Changed the way the billboad music was tallied and Brought Country music into the popular sphere.
Garth Brooks easily.
