14 Million is still a lot, especially considering the budget.

OUCH!
That has to be the lowest opening in the series, isn't it?

14 Million is still a lot, especially considering the budget. With a budget of $11 million, it's already made back its money in 3 days.

Considering it's already made back it's budget, I'm sure that won't stop them from making more. But I am hoping that the fact that it didn't open huge sends a message that the popularity of the Saw series has to be waning and maybe it'll send a message to the execs not to flood the market.

Didn't they already confirm 7 and 8 just this week?
And yeah, Saw being 2nd isn't a big deal if it still turns a profit.

They got 2 in the pipe at the moment, so they'll get at least that before they pull the plug. As the saying goes, 8 is enough.

Okay this is a good new bad news situation for them:
Good: Saw doesn't cost crap to make so it's still going to be profit
Bad: This is a more than 50% drop in opening weekend from the last movie, and the first Saw movie to make less than $30m+ OW since the first!

It's kind of a big deal that it finished second to a movie in it's own genre, a movie that was made for just over $10,000 and made over $11,000 per screen. It shows the execs at Lionsgate that people are growing tired of the "Saw" franchise and that the franchise is clearly running on fumes. Someone earlier mentioned over saturating the market, and I couldn't agree more. Maybe if they took their time and released them every two years, instead of every October, people wouldn't be getting so fed up with the series. Also, I would be willing to bet that the box office would've been significantly lower if it weren't promised that "VI" ties loose ends from I through V, and sets up for the alleged finale in "Saw VII".

Saw has a story? I thought the whole plot was "The Black Scorpion's voice wants you to cherish life, by learning how much pain sucks."

Ya but how much did the marketing budget cost? Probably 20-30 million dollars they spent on advertising. Just end it at 7! It's a lucky number goddammit!

I'm more surprised about Astro Boy bombing. Thought that would've done a lot better.

Marketing budget was probably less than 10 million. It'll make all that money back by the time it's run is over, and once DVD sales are calculated.

I haven't seen any TV advertising for this, nor have I seen much print advertising. All the talk about this movie has been on the internet. How many people out of the general populace knew that a) there even was a Saw 6 b) that it opened this weekend and c) would have gone to see it had a) and b) been satisfied.
I wouldn't tapdance on the franchise's grave just yet until next weekend's numbers come out.
