I know it's a pretty common thing for people to say "We" when talking about a favorite sports team, but I've never been a fan of saying it. I get that you are a fan, but saying "We" like you are actually part of the team in some capacity is silly to me. Anyone can be a fan of "Your" team, so it's nothing special. And I know that fans can make a difference at live events, but why say "We" when you aren't there?
I'm not ragging on people who do say it though, it just never made much sense to me.

I voted "yes" only because I have, but I make a serious effort not to and usually don't.
Even if the Canucks retired #7 in my honour (and others) as a 7th Canuck.

I say "we" usually only when it comes to college teams(because hey, the athletes are students, and if you actually attended that school, you share a connection with them) and special cases.
A special case for me is the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was the fans that brought the team to the city. If it wasn't for the huge support we showed the Hornets when they were relocated here for 2 seasons, I highly doubt Clay Bennett would move the team from Seattle if he didn't think it would be a success. So yeah, I feel like without the fans, the team wouldn't be in the city.

There's no option for "sometimes"?
I try not to, and never slip when talking about the Eagles. I slip sometimes when talking about the Penguins, though :/

I have to admit yes and theres not real reason to justify it...I only do it for the Indiana Pacers though seeing as how ive been a fan since I was 7 years old and im almost 25 now...The blue and gold is special to me...and I grew up in Illinois where Jordan was all the rage...I liked that gangly, trash talking, 3 point shooter on the Pacers instead...

If you're a paid up member of the organiasation, then saying "we" is acceptable, imo.

Yes, I do. It's just a word. Here's five more words: You're not on the team. I'm just kidding, I don't care if people do it. I don't though.

i think the funniest/lamest is when people say "we" when talking about a professional wrestling promotion, especially about the business aspects of it. example, when Smackdown moved to My Network last year someone started a thread in the TNA section titled "With Smackdown gone, should we move to CW" or something like that, and throughout the entire post instead of saying TNA always said "we"

Yes, I do say we for two circumstances. I will admittedly refer to the University of Florida sports as "we" since I went to school there. Not a jock, bit, as was said, as an alumni there is that connection.
Second is with the Indians. I admit it's pretty stupid when I stop and think about it, but I figure if I can still honestly call myself a loyal fan after spending my entire life watching them either suck or break my heart, I have sorta become part of something.
EDIT: On the Indians thing, I also owned stock in them for the short time they were public and never sold it back, so for a while anyway the "we" was technically true.

It's another one of those things I don't put a lot of thought into because it's not that important. And while I may not be on the team..the team does use the money and support to pay the players who are. It doesn't really matter...if it's something people really get uptight about it's laughable though.

In regards to the St. Louis Cardinals- yes, sometimes I slip up and say "we won/lost/are gonna win".
I'm not a professional baseball player and have no official involvement with the organization, but I still don't think it's a big deal- considering that it's my hometown ballclub, anyway (and even if they weren't, meh). Fans have always been passionate about the teams they like, and saying "we"'s certainly not a new trend.

I have season tickets, so I'm financially backing my team.
So I say "We".

Amen, brother. Well, except that I didn't grow up in Illinois and I'm 32. Plus,I didn't start watching basketball until I was about 10 but I've been a Pacers fan for 20+ years. Also, when he played for them,Chuck Person was always my favorite Pacer. After he left though,it was all about Reggie. Anyway,on topic,I've been known to let the "we" slip every now and then but I tend not to. If people do say it though,it doesn't bother me.

I love that Mitchell and Webb clip, the watch the football one is even better.
Anyway I think it's fine, it's the easiest way to refer to your team, saying the clubs name every time sounds stupid and "they" should refer to the opposition.

I say "we" but a lot of the times it's unintentional. Just sorta slips out. I only really do it with the Yankees and occasionally the Giants.

I'm a diehard New Jersey Nets fan so I sometimes let "we" slip out. But honestly, I try not too. It's just silly. If it was true I would be rich beyond my wildest dreams and only work 6 months in the year.

Absolutely. The fans are an extension of the team. If you buy tickets. If you buy gear. If your mood is effected by their performance. Then you are a part (albiet small) of the team.
The team doesn't exist without its fans. Period.
