Let's see: "We won last night!" "The Jaguars won last night!" One makes me think that you play on an actual team, the other is a statement about a team you like. Maybe I'm just wired differently - its not that it bothers me or makes me angry - but I know a lot of people who do acutually play sports (not professionally obviously) so when I hear "Yeah, we won!" I think someone is talking about a team they actually play on. When someone says "We won last night!" to me, I instinctively ask (not sarcastically) - "what sport do you play?" or something like that. Then they give me a look like I'm stupid. That's what bothers me. See, you would never say something like that to an outsider, that's crazy. "We won" is a statement reserved for another fan of the same team. They give you that look because you're being silly. So are they, but they're not hurting anyone. (outside of semantics)

"I didn't get to the store last night because we were real, real close to winning!" Honestly aside from someone actually playing a sport, the next thing that comes to mind is like a WOW troop or a video game campaign or something. Saying "we" we referring to an event that you're not actually playing in is just confusing.

Sometimes, and only to another fan of the team.

I've become obnoxious on this topic and will ask the person who drops the "we" what position on the field/court/etc they play for "their" team.
I think my fandom of sports got reeled in quite a bit when I went to an NFL training camp this past summer and saw 50 year old guys begging 22 year old guys for their signature on a piece of plastic. Once you have one of those "Oh......" moments, its hard to get crazy about stuff anymore.
That's not to say I don't make a fool of myself watching games, I just calmed down on the whole sports fanatic thing.

I do because we the fans are the most vital piece of the machine. Without us there is no team. Having a good solid fan base is more important to a team then having star players. In my time as a Browns fan I have seen players, coaches, owners, and even the team go away. But the fans remained strong brought our team back, and we have supported a sub par product since the return. Fans are the one unchanging dynamic when it comes to sports teams. If anything the players should be the ones who have to earn the right refer to the team as we.

I never use the word "we", and it especially bothers me when people use similar phrases when talking to me.
"Who do the Patriots play next week" is so much more acceptable than "Who do you play next week?"
I really despise people who use "we" and "us" when talking about their team when they are winning, but use "they" when the team is losing. I have a friend who is a Jets fan, and after a loss he always says, "They didn't have it today.", but after a win, he says "We figured it out and we got the win today!" It is just so damned lame.

I don't see a problem with attaching ones ego to a team so much that you feel like your part of it. After all, I pay for the merchadise, when I was in California I paid to listen to the Brewers games on the internet, I've bought tickets, and I have been with my teams longer than any of the players. I'll stop saying "we" if they would like to refund all the money I have put into backing the losers I back. Whoever is on the Lions or Brewers today probably won't be with the teams 20 years from now, but I will still be. So I am more of a part of "we" than "they" are, who will take off when another team offers them more money. I think the stigma around "we" is just something uptight media elites brought up to make fans feel guilt. After all, our loyalty should be to the sports writers, ESPN, and the jerks on the radio, not our teams, according to them. We should bow down before them and follow their marching orders like mind numbed zombies. Feeling attached to your sports teams draws worship from the TRUE Gods, Jim Rome, Colin Cowhead, Chris Berman, and Tony Kornheiser. The unfaithful will be punished! Seriously, just leave us alone.

This I agree with...sort of While I think its perfectly acceptable to say we, and think that as a fan you should have a sense of pride in saying we you should say it in good times and in bad. When the Cardinals got knocked out of the playoffs I said "well we couldn't get it done this year. We'll get 'em next year" Again I FIRMLY believe that the fans are an extension of a team and thus have the absolute right to say we, but if you're going to claim them to the point that you will say "we" then you better say it all the time.

The only time I did that was when Dasher Hatfield won a match yelling "We did it" and proceeded to run straight towards me and we celebrated.

As someone who deals with Red Wing fans on a daily basis and hears people call them by first or pet names like they're buddies I loathe people who say we.

The fans are just as important as the team. Without the fans the team doesn't exist.
So yes.

I also compare it to someone saying "We won!" if a show they support wins a Golden Globe or some kind of award.
They support the show, buy the merchandise, etc, etc - yet only sports fans really use "we."
If Venture Bros ever wins an Emmy I'm going to talk about it the next day at work. "Oh yeah man, we totally won last night!" haha, j/k!
