You guys are actually missing something.
The time frame when this is supposed to happen is during the Winter Olympics. The 10PM/9PM Central timeslot is going to be taken over by Olympic coverage, so, they're gonna put Conan on a two week vacation and put Jay in the timeslot.
At least, that's how it appears to me. We'll just have to see what happens after the Games.

The initial one I saw indicated during the Games. Alright then. I'll just be in the corner over here then, thinking about what I did.

Interesting that TMZ have taken a quote from NBC off the article now.

So this will be the second time that NBC tosses aside a late night host to appease Leno, and this time he doesn't even have that allegedly bitchy manager to absorb the blame. Glad to know someone else knows the Letterman story. If you don't care for Letterman, that's cool. Different strokes and what not. However, the way Letterman was tossed aside was just despicable. I haven't enjoyed Conan since Richter quit, but I still respect him for having the cahonies to get out there and try something new. Something that, outside of Samberg, I can't recall lately in comedy. Conan, so long as he has a sidekick that will tone him back down, and keep him from going into the "I'm so funny, I can't stand myself mode," deserves a shot. However, keep in mind, TBS is trying to get Lopez over (and this may be only me, but Lopez is f***ing hilarious). I'm still, after 14 years, loyal to Letterman, and I will watch Craig Ferguson until I die. Late night is a tougher market than it was in the '90s. And Conan hasn't ever been an idiot. He knew to get a great contract.

Regardless, even though I didn't always like his bits, Conan got out there and tried knew stuff. "In the Year 2000" remains one of my favorite bits to this day.

Andy appears in a lot of bits and they're even letting him sit beside Conan and the guests again.

He bounces off Conan's jokes, he's been a golf-style announcer when Conan had a "joke caddy" for Tiger jokes, does In The Year 3000, and has his own skit, "Andy'll Try It!" where Conan gets Andy to try everything from infomercial crap to jeans hocked on Oprah.

Like people have said, Leno practically STOLE the Tonight Show from Letterman, I heard stories of Jay hiding in closets to listen in on meetings, etc. etc. He's a horrible comedian, he's even more horrible when it comes to his business practices. Outside of the business he seems like a genuinely ok guy, but when it comes to his career, he acts like a douche.
There's a reason when Carson died Letterman was the one to read a monologue full of jokes written by Johnny and not Jay.
It's a shame that Conan's been treated like crap throughout this whole endeavor. Even if you don't like his brand of comedy, nobody deserves to be put through the ringer like he has, despite the large contract.

Well, that makes sense. Obviously means its the death knell for "Last Call," but who watches that anyway. I think these networks should be way more concerned with the numbers AFTER considering DVR usage anyways. It shows how many people are watching the network, even if they skip commercials.

I can totally see Conan going to Fox when his contract is up. NBC and Leno have dicked him around from day one, although I'll admit that Conan isn't as funny at 11:30 as he is an hour later. They just need to let Conan be Conan.
At least Leno's getting out of the 10 PM slot, because that was a tumor on the entire network. It pushed the 10 PM dramas to an earlier slot and wrecked havoc on comedies (and the potential for new comedies and dramas). It was a stupid, bungled transition from the start. They should have offered Leno some sort of weekend Top Gear facsimile or something that would appeal to his tastes and appease him without destroying the network and stifling Conan's success.

In reality, if this switch is the way NBC is looking to go, it may be the perfect move for Conan. You put him in a slot that's after 12:05, so he does have a little more leeway when it comes to risque, cutting humor. It also creates a new war, Conan vs Kimmel. They'll be running head to head after this switch. Interesting.

Last Call sucks, though. Sure, it showcases some great artists, but think the shark is jumped once anything that isn't music or interview is watching some d-bag get a haircut and a straight-razor shave.

Well if Leno takes a half hour slot right before Conan, that could be great for Conan in terms of ratings.

Why would Leno just want a half hour? What can he do in that short time?

www.deadline.com/hollywood/nbc-indicates-changes-coming-to-jay-leno-show-due-to-affiliate-issues/BREAKING NEWS! 4TH UPDATE: On tonight's monologue sent to reporters in advance of airing, Jay Leno sounds angry and upset, even going so far as saying he has "trust" issues with NBC right now. Which indicates that Leno and his reps are fighting NBC's attempts to cancel The Jay Leno Show at 10 PM primetime Monday through Friday which would violate his contract in which the network gave him a 2-year iron-clad commitment. Now NBC's waffling today starts to make sense as Jay and Conan and their reps fight what can only be called a turf war with the net:
