What was the other animated movie to get a best picture nomination? The last one was Beauty and the Beast. And it won. ETA: Now my thoughts: I only care about Best Animated Feature. I'm pushing hard for Coraline, which is the best animated film I've ever seen. Also I'm surprised but happy to see The Secret of Kells get a nom. It deserves it very much so.

Woo-hoo! Wallace and Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death got nominated for Animated short. Normally I would say it was obvious but considering it was shown in the UK and Australia in 2008 it might have been a case of too long ago. The animated short and live action short rules seem so fickle to me. It's not uncommon for a short to have been made and seeking a (EDIT) distributor or seeking recognition in general to finally get nominated a year and a half to two years after its release. I could be mistaken but one or two of last year's nominations for shorts were films already two years old, I think. They go through festivals that no one has ever heard of and eventually meet some sort of Oscar criteria to get on the eligibility list. On the contrary, feature length films (like Hero in 2004, for instance) don't always get nominated after the fact via eligiblity rules that work against them. Weird. And on an unrelated note, it's nothing that hasn't already been said a million times before by film buffs, but can we please eliminate the stupidest award in the history of awards shows and get rid of Best Original Song for crying out loud? Nothing is more of a slap in the face to people who are music fans than having HOLLYWOOD people pick something song-wise as "best."

If anyone is interested I'm doing a Top 20 movies of 2009 countdown. So far five lists and 31 different movies have been nominated. You can send your top ten movies by PM to me. I'm also doing the countdown right before awards night known as the Oscars. Think of it like Wrestlecraps version of the Academy Awards. Here is the link to the original thread. officialfan.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=offtopic&thread=265819&page=1

I've only seen 4 movies on there and the 3 nominated (Hurt Locker, Basters, and Up). Having recently watched The Hurt Locker, I have to give it the edge. But I would like to see Inglourious Basterds win too. I agree about James Cameron saying that it can be the Platoon for the Iraq war. I also think that Christolph Waltz is a lock for Best Supporting Actor, just like Ledger had it last year.

I also think that Christolph Waltz is a lock for Best Supporting Actor Yep. I think that one's in the bag. He thoroughly deserves it. I feel sorry for Stanley Tucci because he's really good in The Lovely Bones and just about any other year he'd win.

Tucci's creepy laugh when he has Susie alone in the underground shack thing is worth a nomination alone.
That said, I think Harrellson and Plummer would probably win it over him this year. Its hard to really tell because EVERY precursor has gone to Waltz, but I think that the overall bad reviews for Lovely Bones would hurt his chances.
Although, he was also very good as the husband in Julie & Julia, so I could see some people rewarding him for both by voting him higher for one role.

I'm just happy District 9 is up for best picture and thats pretty much all I have to say. Oh apart from I hope Avatar doesn't win best picture but it probably will. Even though it isn't the best picture of 2009, at all. Not even close.

Alot of fascinating storylines and Facts: (1) This is Meryl Streep's 16th Oscar nomination. One of them came from a Wes Craven movie. True story. (2) The 81 year old great Christopher Plummer gets (believe it or not) his first Oscar nomination of his lengthy storied career. So yeah, a Star Trek movie villain got nominated. (3) The Hangover is the first EVER Golden Globe picture winner to be totally shut out at Best Picture. Toy Story 2 won the same award and also failed to be nominated for Best Picture (4) Peter Jackson, as a producer on District 9, got his fourth Best Picture nomination (the other three obviously LOTR) (5) Already been mentioned, but this is the first time that ex-spouses (Cameron & Bigelow) both got nominated for Director. (6) Transformers 2, that $200+ million loud toy commercial, got shanked at Best Visual Effects. See Michael Bay, you cost your movie a nomination. I can't believe District 9 stole, that's right, STOLE Star Trek's spot. The Blind Side and A Serious Man have NO chance of winning Picture, since they each only have one other nomination.

I can't believe District 9 stole, that's right, STOLE Star Trek's spot. And Star Trek stole Transformers 2's VFX Oscar nod. We can't continue this cycle of movie vengeance against other movies.
