I'm not too big into anime (the only one I ever got into in the past was Cromartie High) but my cousin bought the first 2 seasons of Deathnote on DVD a few days ago and I was hooked by the end of the first episode. I watched the first 3 discs of season one, and I plan on finishing the rest soon.
The show is just captivating. Extremely well written stuff. I love that it's not just another anime about a guy training and learning powers half the time, and fighting the other half. Does anybody have any viewing suggestions based on the fact that I'm loving this show?

Meh, it's all right. Second half isn't as good as the first and the anime has a lame ending compared to the manga. It's a decent shounen.

I liked it. Have no clue about any similar animes to suggest, though.

It was a pretty smart anime that unfortunately turned into something of a fad.
If you liked Death Note, I'd maybe suggest Baccano, if you can stomach some pretty extreme violence and don't mind being jerked around by the story being told out of order.

Ever watched the live action ones with Tatsuya Fujiwara in it?

The manga Future Diary has a similar theme. 12 people receive cellphones that have diary messages from the future, turns out it's a game from a God and in order to win they have to eliminate each other buy using the clues from the future. One of the girl characters Yuno is bat shit crazy, and it's awesome.

The manga is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the anime.
Also, you do know that only a small fraction of anime are about people training and powering up, right? If anything the biggest genre of anime now is some form of "slice of life" series.

I really enjoyed Death Note up until a certain point (everyone should know what that certain point is as it involves THE major spoiler in the series). And then it just nosedived. But until then it was pretty awesome, even if there was way too much "Just as Planned" at times.
Gotta love the dramatic potato chip eating, though.

Not really into anime myself.
I know Death Note was pretty popular a couple of years ago, and I thought it sounded interesting, but never watched it.
Last year, Film 4 showed the live-action movies. Figured I'd give it a shot and watch the first one, and I absolutely loved it. Even when it ended on a cliffhanger I didn't think "Oh for God's sake!". Instead I was really excited to watch the 2nd one which was showing the next Saturday.
So the movies were my introduction, then I spent a week or so in the Summer watching the anime, and again I loved it. Great story, interesting characters, and as events in the movie happen different to the show I didn't feel like I had seen it all before.
I've read a bit on the net and Kroot's sentiment is a pretty popular one. But personally, as an anime philistine, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
EDIT For those of you who have read the manga, can you answer me this? Does Matt do something incredible in it? I just can't figure out why he has such a fan following when he was in the show for a cup of coffee.

I love it, although the whole "I knew he was gonna do/say that so I did/said this just incase" thing between Light and L got annoying after awhile. Brilliant anime though. {Spoiler}And I love how there's a little mystery behind to whether or not the unknown Shinigami is actually Light reincarnated.

One of my top five favorite animes ever. Complex characters, very well drawn/animated, engaging story, and even a bit of slash potential.

Which hasn't got anything right since Azumanga Daioh. Death Note is a unique Anime, which sadly gets degraded due to not being like the Manga or due to having an odd fanbase in japan, but with fantasic art, and well produced writing, it can stand up alongside Cowboy Bebop.

Deathnote and Cowboy beebop, well produced writing Beebop I'll give you but the writing in Death Note took such a nose dive in the second half *And the first half wasn't that great either, and I'm a fan* it can hardly be considered well produced.

What Death Note did wrong in some parts, it made up for the right in big parts. Oh yeah, it's written "Bebop".....like the Jazz style.

I'll take your post seriously, if you take the unnecessary picture out. What's unnecessary about it? He's just expressing his opinion in a colorful manner, I'm sure he wasn't trying to laugh in your face about it.

As far as similar things go...
In my opinion Code Geass is pretty much just Death Note with big robots. Some would agree, some would disagree, but there's no denying some similarities.

I love it, im not very into Anime but Death Note is amazing and yes i think is better than other "smart" animes out there, its very well written and a deep story, i love everything about it (Except Misa she is annoying) but besides that, one of my favourite things right now, a little tainted for the dumb fangirls but its ok, still awesome.

Yeah they're similar but...... compared to Code Geass R2 the second half of Death Note is a f***ing masterpiece. I've never hated a second season more than R2. Not even 00 S2 was as bad as R2. Just jesus talk about sloppy writing.

I really liked it, but just lost interest half-way through. So, I agree with others that the second half isn't as good as the first.
