I could sympathize with Light at first as he was mainly a Machiavellian "ends justifies the means" guy. He had a tool that could conceivably change the world and started to do so by killing rapists, murderers, and other unseemly folk. It was his own brand of justice.
Then he started covering his own ass instead of specifically punishing the wicked and turned from a Machiavellian into a pure monster obsessed with remaking the world in his image. That's when I stopped sympathizing with him entirely and wanted to see him taken down.

When he killed Ray and his wife is when I stopped. You know the kicker? If he had not done it all so quickly (or at all), L would not have become so obsessed with him and Near would have never thought much of him.

One thing you must remember, despite all his posturing Light is a f***ing immature child who actually doesn't think things all the way through.

Love the series, though after L dies the only real thing of interest is Mello.
