I liked it, though they did take some huge leaps in the story. I liked the premise and characters a lot, but they did expect you to believe some incredible things about the genius of Light, L, Mello, and Near. For that matter, some of the secondary characters were either unbelievably dense for their roles (Misa as a cerebral serial killer; Matsuda as a top investigator) or just as clever as the supposed unmatched geniuses ( {Spoiler}the series finale was predicated by Mikami making all the same decisions as Light ). Unfortunately, I don't have the money to buy up the manga to compare the anime to. If I did have money, I would not only pick up Death Note, but Full Metal Alchemist as well. I like the characters and story in that one a little better. Granted, I do realize that the original anime has little to do with the manga (it was produced at the same time as the manga and they wished to avoid the mistakes of Dragonball Z, specifically having to stretch the episodes out so that they could share the same story as the more slowly released manga) and I cannot wait until Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood gets a proper English dub here in the States for comparison purposes.

As far as similar things go... In my opinion Code Geass is pretty much just Death Note with big robots. Some would agree, some would disagree, but there's no denying some similarities. Yeah they're similar but...... compared to Code Geass R2 the second half of Death Note is a f***ing masterpiece. I've never hated a second season more than R2. Not even 00 S2 was as bad as R2. Just jesus talk about sloppy writing. Now that it's been a long time since I watched R2, I have to say that it was pretty bad. I got excited during the time when it was airing, but a piece of my brain was also complaining at the pretty bad quality of pretty much everything. Anyway, Death Note. Liked it, but the second half just got a bit too weird for me. Writing is good, I guess. I was reading Monster about the same time and I liked it way more than Death Note.

But not as bad as Gundam SEED Destiny's second half.

Not really. It started out OK, but they really made Light way too big of a goddamn douchebag for me to sympathize with him they way most people seem to.
Every time you think he couldn't be more of an ass.... well, he becomes that much more of an ass.

Every time you think he couldn't be more of an ass.... well, he becomes that much more of an ass. You were never supposed to sympathies with light at all. Main reason I kept watching was to see him get what was coming to him. Manga did it better with him screaming like a little bitch for Ryuk to save him and Ryuk just sitting their laughing and telling him how much he sucked and how he told Light this was all going to happen as he writes his name in the Death Note.

It's pretty cool. I got into it through the live action films (I prefer the ending of the second film to the series) although I'm still not sure what to think of L: Change the World.
I then started watching it every week when it started being shown on ABC2 after Good Game.

I liked SEED Destiny in the beginning. Then all the horrible stuff started happening because the head writer was a bitch and unprofessional and caused alot of VA's to quit the business.

Also, normal people don't survive getting hit with giant laser beams!

Yeah shutting down a Reactor sure does save you from having a giant word with a beam on one side when it's SHOVED RIGHT THROUGH YOUR f***ING COCKPIT!

I liked it, though the whole "well I already thought of that" "well I already thought you'd think of that so I did this" "well I knew you knew I knew so...." ad nauseum gets kind of old.
death Note also gave us the greatest meme ever with the potato chip scene.
then again as cheesy as it is my favorite anime is Bleach so what do I know?

Every time you think he couldn't be more of an ass.... well, he becomes that much more of an ass. that's because you're not supposed to sympathize with him, especially after he kills Naomi. people who sympathize with light are missing the point. it's supposed to be about the futility of revenge and how having that kind of power turns you into a monster, but a lot of people just see light and go "ooh pretty".

I cheered for Light, mostly for being a bastard until the second half, although I cheered for the other characters for different reasons. I did not sympathize with him, though. In the end everything felt so complicated and weird.

Every time you think he couldn't be more of an ass.... well, he becomes that much more of an ass. Well, he is a "Villain Protagonist" for a reason. Problem was, a lot of people sympathized with him, so the author turned him into an even bigger ass to stop that from happening (with limited success).

I could never understand how people could root for Light. Like as a character, yeah, but to support? Funnily enough, I did find myself siding with Light during the first movie. Part of what I enjoyed so much about the movies was that there was massive moral ambiguity. I knew what Light was doing was wrong, but I could understand why he was doing what he was. Though by the end, I turned against him completely {Spoiler}after he'd killed his girlfriend just so it would prove he wasn't Kira.

I never watched the Anime, but the Manga is a great, great read.
I didn't like the movie, but it wasn't Street Fighter levels of terrible.
I've heard good things about MPD Psycho in terms of similiar stuff.
