www.gamestooge.com/2010/03/17/ign-hit-with-massive-layoffs/An internal memo has been leaked that indicates that there will be a number of staffing cutbacks from every division of the videogame website. No numbers of how many released, but if true, this is going to get ugly and sad for a lot of people. With so many good studios closing or being absorbed, and scores of talented people being kicked to the curb, I really feel like we're watching the beginning of the end of the videogame age as we did in the early 80's. Hopefully, it can bounce back.

*crosses fingers hoping Casamassina is one of them gone, though being fully aware that him being booted from IGN is the equivalent to HHH and Shawn being fired nowadays from WWE*
...nothing against Casamassina, I am sure he's a good guy...but if you want to talk about someone who just does not get it...he is the Vince McMahon of that site both in that he's pretty much the boss and he is so behind half the time. I will never forget his "Nintendo is lazy..." article he paraded around for months, which was nothing more than a fanboy rant with correct grammar, and all his sheep acting like he came across some grand revelation (which would be true if you had suddenly decided that day that you will listen to other's opinions).
Okay, im done. Sorry.

Also, IGN has been kinda bloated, staff wise, for a while. Makes sense for them to trim some of the excess fat.

Video games are the only form of media where public spending goes up during a recession. Yes, some companies are struggling, but companies that make good products will be fine.

Early April Fools joke? Maybe? No?
If true though that's bad, not even big websites like that are safe from layoffs.

At this point, with the way the economy have been lately, I don't think making an April Fool's Day joke saying that a good portion of your staff is being laid off would be a good idea, much less a feasible idea.

So now they'll sit around all day playing games and spouting opinion on the internet, are they even going to notice they've been fired?

I have no sympathy for game reviewers. Most of them piss me off to no end. They drool over games during the preview phase, talk them up, then maybe in passing mention "one or two problems I'm sure will be hammered out by release", then s*** all over it and give it a 5 when it comes out. Like you couldn't tell it was going to suck? Stop being babies and just tell the truth. Maybe it'll piss some people off, or, maybe it'll make people release better games if they know people won't sugarcoat them anymore.

I'm not surprised as I was recently reading the reviews of the most recent series of being human on there, it's a TV show that about 1 million people watch in England and hasn't been shown in America yet. Now I love the show and think it's second only to Dexter but I thought that was a bit of a niche thing for them to cover for what is supposed to be a videogame site.

Not too surprising. Their staff is incredibly bloated, and a lot of that came because a lot of people were hiring their friends to work alongside them there.

Here's hoping Travis Fickett gets fired. Guy cannot give any South Park a good review unless it doesn't have any satire in it.

I guess Uncle Murdoch's tightening his purse. I'm surprised to hear a website could be bloated, you would think they would be pretty self conscious of that sort of thing. Given the internet's history. But maybe they thought differently thanks to their new proprietor.
I hate to see anyone lose their jobs, but at least IGN was able to wait it out this long. Then again, doubt they were making much money in the first place. If I'm going to get a job writing poor reviews and opinion on video games, I'm going to jump at the chance as long as it pays the rent.

Wait, IGN is still around? I'm not surprised; gaming blog sites like Kotaku are really making these old guard sites like IGN and Gamespot slowly obsolete, and with good reason. They should either adapt and keep up with the business as it is, or they have to make sacrifices like this in order to survive.

Kotaku has more new articles during the weekdays than IGN does, and they half like half or 1/3 of the staff that just ONE DIVISION of IGN has! And on top of that has more daily readers......guess it doesn't hurt that they have a writer in Japan and a writer in Australia allowing them to have new stories 24/5, right? I say 24/5, cause they slow down a lot during the weekend cause everyone save 1 writer is off.

Of course, that's because their writers are worked like they're in a sweatshop. Not really. I mean most of their articles are small, easy to read, and they have more than enough time to not only play games for leisure, but for reviews. They also have enough time to have their own weekly podcast and every now and then show up on taped gaming shows, which actually take a good chunk of time to do.
