So I know Lil Wayne is insanely popular, and has a guest spot on nearly every popular pop single recently, but am I the only one that finds him just not that good? I do like rap, and a varitey of different voices in rap but I just find Lil Wayne really annoying, so what am I missing with him? Why is he so popular over a lot of other rappers?

Lil Wayne is terrible.
He is one of the reasons most mainstream rap blows.

He's not Nas, but at times he can be elite.

Lil Wayne has two main problems:
1) How much music he puts out. He has so many guest spots, mix tapes, free styles, etc, that a lot of it is crap because hes just putting stuff out there for the sake of putting it out there. He can SOMETIMES be quite good, but because hes over saturating the market its hurting him more than anything.
2) The drugs. Dude is messed up so much of the time its actually pretty scary. He needs to put the drugs down.
Its too bad because Wayne from 05-07 was a beast on the mic. IMO.

He isn't very good even when he is at his best. The guy just can't rap that well.
It's kind of funny that the most hardcore rapper out there now is Eminem.
Lil Wayne actually just got sentenced to jail for a year about a month ago. He should be out in about 8 months. I think it was due to drug charges.

He's taken the whole Jay-z/Biggie I don't write mantra of rapping a bit far. When he's in the booth, it seems like the first thing that comes into his head, he says even if it doesn't rhyme. I've always felt that if more artists took their time and wrote well thought-out verses, I wouldn't have to hear "hip-hop is dead" anymore.

I've always felt that if more artists took their time and wrote well thought-out verses, I wouldn't have to hear "hip-hop is dead" anymore. But not writing verses and saying whatever is on top of your head is what makes you a great rapper, not dedicating your time to completing your thoughts! /sarcasm The funny thing about people who scream "Hip hop is dead" is: A.) Nas created that slogan as an easy way to drum up hype for his album. B.) Hip hop is not in any sense of danger, which people would know if they dug below top 40 stations and what's populating the mainstream right now. I haven't cared for Lil Wayne since the summer of 2006. Dude's overexposed, and his legion of fans annoy me to no end. He's the only rapper I can think of that has had the title "Best rapper alive" applied to him and wasn't anywhere near that title. And while I don't cheer for any one to go to jail, he needed some type of way out of the lifestyle he's been leading for the last few years. Goodness knows he needs those last 4 months in jail as well.

You aren't missing a damn thing. He's awful. He's the Lennox Lewis of rap. He only seems decent because the competition is so shitty

Pre-Carter III: Guy was incredible. Post-Carter III: He just does enough to sound OK. Plus overexposure does not help his cause.

I can't say I've heard even one of his songs all the way through. I'm still sticking with T-Pain. At least he has fun with it.

DMX in 97-98 and 50/G-Unit in 2003 both flooded the market but they didn't oversaturate themselves(G-Unit actually did but that's another story altogether). Wayne just needs to write again and he'll be better off in the long run. As to your second point, I think he'll end up like X has now unfortunately.

Oh so Wayne can't rap now?!
Wayne will go down as one of the GOATs when it's all said and down. Stop listening to what you hear on the radio. Wayne can rap.

Anytime someone can rattle off a list of 50 rappers, easily, that are better than (insert rapper here), they aren't even close to the greatest of all time. Can Lil Wayne rap? Yes. Is he skilled when he actually puts in more than 2 seconds of effort? Yes. Has he basically become a parody of himself in the last 3-4 years? Yes. And I don't listen to the radio, by the way. I form my music opinions based on what I personally think, and you can't convince me that Lil Wayne is anywhere near the greatest of all time.

His overexposed, i can definitely agree with that. Time away will do him some good.
But now that his popular, of course he'll receive a negative aura. Not a damn things changed in his actual ability, but now his no good anymore?
Yeah, anyway, not everyone likes the same styles, so if you're missing anything, you're probably just missing Weezy and who he is. Not a big deal. Most talented rapper alive, yes. Should be limiting himself a lot more so he can let that shine? Yes.
