I have three that I owned the VHS and also bought the DVD: Office Space Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie Evil Dead - Army of Darkness
As far as video games go, I know I bought duplicates of Tales of Symphonia, Drakengard 2, and Capcom Fighting Evolution. I guess they were so cheap, I went ahead and bought them without realizing that I already owned them. Plus I have a few NES game duplicates in my collection.

I did it for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but thats just a great movie. Both are collectors editions, the latest was a faux leather look to the case with a film cell, and the script. I'm sure I've bought holy grail a few times now <_< >_> *cough* Otherwise... I have the limited Dvd and the Ultra edition of Watchmen as well... but the 5 disk blu ray ultra edition was a gift... if that counts :-p

Oh man Void, I've done this so many times I couldn't name all the movies I did it for. Let me try to think of a few. Blade Runner from Director's Cut DVD to 5-Disc-Special-Edition Blu Ray The Thing from Special Edition DVD to Blu-Ray Terminator 2 from VHS to Ultimate Edition DVD to Extreme Edition DVD to Skynet Edition Blu-Ray Star Wars from Original Trilogy VHS to Special Edition Trilogy VHS to DVD Edition Trilogy Plus a lot, lot, lot more things. I gotta get those Blade Runner and T2 sets someday.

Just upgraded several DVDs to Blu Ray, and also have two DVD copies of a few select movies, like TEXAS CHAIN SAW and my favorite film of all time, JAWS.
I swear to God when they release that on Blu Ray....I'm going to get a copy as soon as humanly possible.
Wonder what they're waiting on with that, anyway?

That reminds me, I've also bought Texas Chainsaw Massacre twice on DVD. The 2 disc Special Edition is great. The documentary alone is worth the price.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is buying the original Star Wars trilogy twice on DVD. Once, when they came out for the first time ever and the second time when they came out with the unaltered version as extras.

When I can get some cash, I'm sure I'll upgrade my The Incredibles and Cars discs to Blu-Ray.
Otherwise, I don't think I've ever done this.

All the time. I tend to hand off my old copies to the nearest chum in need lest that chum be me in need of money.
The most superficial reason has been a better case, but then that is one of my minor little OCD things.
The most common reason though is exchanging a Fullscreen gift for Widescreen though.

I had to buy Superman: The Motion Picture (2 Disc Special Edition that was released to tie with Superman Returns release) again after the double sided Director's Cut DVD got scratched and unplayable. Then I discover that the 2 Disc tie in edition was just the theatrical cut! What the F...! Why would you do that. Why would you not put the superior director's cut on the two disc special edition? God that pissed me off. Now I have to buy it again. I'm just going to get the Blu-Ray edition. I hear that has the directors cut on it.

Oh yeah!
I almost forgot Night of the Living Dead. I've bought that a few times. A LOT of sucky editions not to mention one with "new" scenes added in from Romero that are pointless and match for absolute crap when crammed in there. So far I am still looking for one with plenty of documentary stuff as well as commentary from George or something. Right now I own the "Rifftrax" release they did. That copy ain't going anywhere no matter what other edition I find.

I forgot Ghostbusters which was the first Blu-Ray disk I bought when I got my PS3 and had previously bought the 1+2 dvd set... which is actually on my desk right now.

I did it twice. But just because I forgot I owned them There's nothing like spending money, taking off the shrink wrap, then slowly remembering you already owned something.

If a new video format comes out yes. I'm currently in the process of buying Blus to replace their DVD editions. So far I've rebaught The Matrix the most:
Widescreen VHS -> Snap Case DVD -> Ultimate Matrix Collection DVD -> Ultimate Matrix Collection Blu-Ray.

I got the special edition trilogy to upgrade from when I purchased each of the regular ones seperately. And I've gotten some blu ray upgrades to some of my titles because they are just so much better than the dvd.
