To get rid of an undesirable version of it?
I just ordered the new(er) limited edition of The Fast and the Furious to get rid of the gross fullscreen "Tricked Out" edition which was the only one available where I lived for some reason back in the day. Also got Tokyo Drift in the same fashion to replace it being in fullscreen too (which was an accident) and I was curious as to the special features that both would have.
Ironically, I've owned the first film no more than four times now. The first bare bones DVD version of it (stolen back when), the "Tricked Out" edition which accidentally got left behind in another state, and then another copy of it to replace the one I left behind but later found when I moved back @_@ and now the new classy LE version of it.

The closest I have come is buying a Blu-Ray version of a movie I own on regular DVD.

That counts, since it'd seem you're getting better picture out of it or something.

The Transformers: The Movie.
Originally I had the Rhino released special edition one. Later I bought the 2 disc 20th Anniversary one with the motion hologram (I don't know what the official name of that is) that changes from Optimus to Rodimus.

I've bought a movie I've already owned - but usually by accident. The only time I'll re-buy one usually is if there's a special edition of it coming out (like the 4 Disc Blade Runner).

I bought new copies of Major League, Spaceballs, and Dodgeball when my brother moved out of the house and took his DVD's with him. There's a few that I need to re-buy now that he has them, mostly the Bourne trilogy and Terminator 2.

I did it for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but thats just a great movie. Both are collectors editions, the latest was a faux leather look to the case with a film cell, and the script.

I wanted those real bad when Pioneer put them out over here but the mega high price for me at the time was too much to ever get it. And now it's even more expensive.

I actually managed to buy Caddyshack II twice. I don't even know how that happened. Unless I was thinking I was getting a great deal on the first one.
Not a DVD, but I have managed to own no less than three different disks of Pearl Jam's ten. I only remember buying one.
