So I was watching some Dice videos on YT (I have never heard any of his comedy before) and now I wish I hadn't. I mean usually I'm pretty open to comedy and like a wide array, but all I get out of this dude is a fake tough guy who puffs on a cigarette for 20 minutes, tells nursery rhymes and ends every sentence with "broad" or "bitch". Is anybody here a fan of this guy, if so I hope I didn't offend, but I just don't get the appeal behind the guy.

Well, he's kind of a walking punchline now.
He was a fad, basically. He was controversial and a huge deal because of it. Then his star dimmed and he turned into a nobody. Just sort of a footnote in the entertainment industry now.

I've been told that He was supposed to be the white Eddie Murphy and next big thing in comedy until The Adventures of Ford Fairlane bombed big time.

He was actually starting to lose popularity by the time that came out. His window of peak popularity was actually relatively short all things considered. Once people figured out that all there was to him was misogynistic ranting and dirty nursery rhymes, people turned away in droves.

Huh I thought he was a lot bigger than that, of course I wasn't even alive during his time (assuming this was mid to late 80's which is what I've seen from him). And half his stuff doesn't even make sense "Jack and Jill went up a hill, 'cause Jill was a broad" and then the audience laughs

That was the year that he released two albums, had the SNL controversy where Nora Dunn refused to work the show because he was the guest host, and then Ford Fairlain came out. He sold out Madison Square Garden, then filmed. The concent film bombed in '91, and seriously, by about 1992 he was old news. He fell off the face of the Earth before resurfacing with a failed attempt at rebranding himself as a sitcom star in the mid-90s, but he was a joke by that point. The way he's talked about a lot of people assume he was some legendary figure, but he was a flash in the pan.

Dice was great in the 80's , he was never the funniest comedian , it was more of the atmosphere and attitude ( kinda like pro wrestling) Its one of the things you had to be there to appreciate

Oddly enough My brother saw him live in Las Vegas last year. According to him Dice Clay was a total wanker and tried to pick a fight with half the audience.

It did give us 'Dueling Dices.'
And here's a pretty damning (but funny) story about Dice's current affairs:

Hey, I didn't understand the hype back when it was happening. I tried to watch one of his stand-up videos and had to shut it off after about 20 minutes. I just didn't find him to be funny. Profane, sure, but not funny.
Whenever someone went to rent one his videos, I'd steer them towards the Sam Kinison tapes by saying "This is the guy Dice was supposed to tour with and Dice chickened out."

Yeah, the guy still thinks its twenty years ago and that he's in any way culturally relevant. The fact that he doesn't realize what an antique he is is about the only thing funny about him.

I never understood the appeal of this guy either. To me, he was the kind of comedian who was shocking for the sake of being shocking.

I think his appeal was that he was the anti-80's comedian. Reagan, family values, the Moral Majority, all that ... and he was, like Kinison but amped up to the Nth degree, someone who stood for everything against that: vulgarity, sinful behavior, promiscuity. He was the release valve. And when the nation started to transition away from those societal beliefs and whatnot, they moved away from him.
That being said, "The Day The Laughter Died" is brilliant. 2+ hours of comedy without anything prepared, all improv'ed.
Jed Shaffer ~And I don't care what the box office or critics say, Ford Fairlane is one of my Top 10 movies of all time. Seriously.

But he is still relevant, otherwise he'd be forgotten. How many other comedians were around in his era that no one talks about at all, or even were remembered 5 into tier career?

He's ovah he-uh now!
Anthony Cumia probably does the funniest Dice, but Gottfried is great at it, too.
He's basically the Ultimate Warrior of comedy. He wasn't the best, but he was the right act at the right time to take off. Power to him, but it didn't last once people got tired of the schtick.
