I'd say you'd be right there. The only closest I can think of is Tim Cahill. Shane Warne?

Yeah, but in cricketing nations, Warne is a household name (and face... on my dartboard). In all nations, Hewitt is famous, but not nearly AS famous.

Hmm, true. Definately not easy to choose. We definately don't have out own Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods for the US? I say he top five at the most but not the top. I say this because yeah when you think Golf you think Woods. But is Golf a bigger sport then MLB, NFL,or NBA. I didn't put NHL because they may pass them.
Currently yeah he got a lot of media because of the cheating on his wife stuff. But you watch ESPN. I say Bret Farve is bigger. because when ANYTHING happens with him. ESPN will talk all day about it. No matter if he really news or not. They will spend all day talking about Favre MAY comeback to play. Kobe Bryant is another one you can make a case for for the NBA him and Labron James. Hell James got a lot of coverage before he played his first NBA game. That says something.

I'd say Michael Phelps is up there too, seeing as the Olympics is the second most watched sporting event in the world.

Too many to count in the USA. Ever is probably Muhammad Ali. I'd argue Babe Ruth. And I know, there are a lot of countries that don't follow baseball. However, Babe Ruth is fairly universal and legendary in status.

I'd say alot of the world knows about Babe Ruth, but Ali fought all over the world, I would say it makes a difference.

Is Nash bigger than Crosby up north? I don't follow hockey and I'm not Canadian so I'm clueless about this. No I'm pretty sure Crosby is bigger then Nash in Canada. Most Canadian's including me don't even know which team Nash plays for or have to take a second to figure it out before answering while everyone knows that Crosby plays for the Pens. Every SportsChek or sports store has nothing but Crosby Jersey's and endorsements, casual hockey fans in Canada or people who don't even follow hockey only know Luongo, Crosby, or Ovechkin. Nash maybe more famous then Crosby internationally but not nationally in Canada imo. Exactly. But the topic isn't "Who is the most famous athlete in each different country" it's "Who is the most famous athlete from each different country."

Even with guys like Woods, Ali, and Ruth, I'd have to say Michael Jordan easily walks away from this in the US. No other athlete in the US has had their name or a single pose be so iconic or marketable(Woods has come close, though). Plus in the 90's in a sports situation, you could just say the name Michael and everyone would know you meant MJ.
Not only that, but you pretty much ask any of the guards currently in the NBA under the age of say 26 and probably 90% say they're playing basketball because they watched MJ as a kid.
Not saying that guys like Ruth, Ali, and Woods aren't great or well known because they obviously are. But Jordan took the work of those before him such as Dr. J and brought to the doorstep of pop culture, and in doing so completely changed a sport.
