Who do you think is the most famous or recognizable athlete from each different country? Some are easy:
Usain Bolt-Jamaica David Beckham-England (right?)
Who else, ya think?

Dominican Republic: Too many in MLB to count. A-Rod, Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Ubaldo Jimenez, Etc.

For the UK I'd say Lennox Lewis is in the same league as Beckham. If you're talking about only people who are still active in their sport though, then it's Beckham.

For Canada, I think right now it would either be Gretzky or Nash.

Perhaps, but the topic is "most famous or recognizable athlete from each different country."
I picked Nash because I believe more people follow basketball than hockey in the states, and because outside of Pittsburgh nobody really likes Crosby.

No I'm pretty sure Crosby is bigger then Nash in Canada. Most Canadian's including me don't even know which team Nash plays for or have to take a second to figure it out before answering while everyone knows that Crosby plays for the Pens. Every SportsChek or sports store has nothing but Crosby Jersey's and endorsements, casual hockey fans in Canada or people who don't even follow hockey only know Luongo, Crosby, or Ovechkin. Nash maybe more famous then Crosby internationally but not nationally in Canada imo.

Here, at our airport and the entrance and exit to town we have big signs that say Hometown of Sidney Crosby, They even shut down our main street to hold a parade when he won the cup.

I don't even know his first name, if you just said Nash, I'd assume you mean Rick Nash, who is more famous to a Canadian than Basketball Nash.

I'd say you'd be right there. The only closest I can think of is Tim Cahill.
