'Hallelujah' is a funny one because there was a generation of idiots who thought Jeff Buckley wrote it, and now there'll be a load who'll think that wotsername from Reality TV Show 3253214 did it.

MSN UK did a list on this recently...
*Florence & The Machine - You Got The Love (originally by The Source & Candi Staton) *Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You (originally by Dolly Parton) *The Beach Boys - Barbara Ann (originally by The Regents) *Frank Sinatra - New York, New York (originally by Liza Minnelli) *Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (originally by The Oak Ridge Boys) *The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn (originally by Pete Seeger) *PP Arnold - The First Cut Is The Deepest (originally by Cat Stevens) *The Jacksons - Blame It On The Boogie (originally by Mike Jackson) - yes, a different one
I'd also like to bring up "She's The One" by Robbie Williams, which was originally done by World Party.

'Spirit in the Sky' was first recorded by The Attack, but Jeff Beck's version charted first.
'Heard it through the Grapevine' was originally recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips, but most people would call it a Marvin Gaye song.
I've also heard people call 'Without You' a Mariah Carey song which makes me want to vomit.

Greenbaum, as I recall, went on to become an insurance salesman. Speaking of the Byrds a couple posts up, they've got a Bob Dylan connection that's a bit odd. Mr. Tambourine Man was written by Dylan, recorded by the Byrds just a few days after Dylan cut his master track, and then released earlier than Dylan's, but not performed earlier than Dylan's. Odd stuff. Dunno who is covering who there.

I had no idea Its My Life by No Doubt was a cover until much later on. Really? I wasn't aware of that either, I've never even heard of 'Talk Talk' That No Dobut cover isn't even a good one. They do nothing to make the song their own. It's just Talk Talk's version performed by No Doubt.

"Needles and Pins" which I first heard by the Ramones, had previously been done by the Searchers, Jackie DeShannon, and (I think) Sonny Bono.

Mayer Hawthorne's "Maybe So, Maybe No" is a cover of The New Holidays' song!

Speaking of Aerosmith...
Yeah, should've suspected it was a cover.

When I first heard them, I had no idea that 10,000 Maniacs' "Because the Night" and the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" were covers.

When I first heard them, I had no idea that 10,000 Maniacs' "Because the Night" and the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" were covers. "Because the Night" is an interesting one. Bruce Springsteen wrote the music in a different style (almost country-folk sounding) but was having trouble coming up with lyrics. He decided to give it to Patti Smith, who not only wrote lyrics but composed the music in the style her version and 10,000 Maniac's version is known for. Bruce never actually recorded it, but to this do he will perform it on occasion using his original country-folk style combined with Patti Smith's lyrics. *Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (originally by The Oak Ridge Boys) Although when they recorded it (followed by a version by the songwriter), it was known as "Don't Tell My Heart".

Bob Dylan is the poster boy for this thread. During the 60s he wrote basically every hit song that didn't belong the Beach Boys, or the Beatles.
