Like my brother and i are WWE mad and my dad always says that its Fake...then i show him stuff like Foley going of the cell and the rock hitting foley 10 times in the head with a chair...Yeah we all know Wrestling is staged but the in ring action certainly isnt fake...well some is but most isnt..

...Well yeah. What people who don't understand wrestling never argue is the point that all or most forms of entertainment have to be deceiving or false in some way. Otherwise, it'd be like watching a film and after every scene the director says "CUT! Okay guys, next scene. It's going to be good."

A.) I get that nearly every day.
B.) I oftentimes just respond by saying "Yeah. I know" and going on to compare it to Theater..
C.) I'm amazed people are quick to jump to that everytime someone they wouldn't expect to be a fan, brings it up. Even before I was into Wrestling, if someone brought it up, I wouldn't go "IT'S FAKE!" I just replied "That's lame".

It's always bothered me when that's someone's reply to me telling them how much I enjoy wrestling. As if by now, I still haven't learned about that.

I had a friend and his girlfriend join me at Winghouse for Survivor Series. I shrugged off the numerous comments about how fake it was but when she said that it was ridiculous that they got paid for it and constantly compared it to gay porn I got annoyed. She was just being ignorant and saying the blood was ketchup.

It really is the only thing I hear from non wrestling fans. Other than it's stupid. I can easily understand someone's opinion about not liking wrestling. I don't like a lot of things. Given my track record of dislike, it's suprising that I do like wrestling. But when the only thing to back up the opinion of it being stupid is because it's fake, I just don't know what to say to that.

"Really, you like Stephen King? You know that book 'Christine'? That's fake! Yeah, that car never actually killed people. It's just words on a piece of paper. Totally fake. How could you like that?"

People just don't "get it". Wrestling is something you need to "get". And most people don't. When people hear you like wrestling, they assume that it's because you like violence and they then take it upon themselves to inform you that it's, in fact, fake violence and not real, as if they are doing you a favour.
What these people don't understand that wrestling is so much more than two oiled up, sweaty grown men in speedos grappling each other in the ring. It's art, it's a form of theater, it's the greatest form of entertainment in the world. At least in my eyes. It's the art of pro wrestling to tell a story in the ring that looks painful and dangerous, but really isn't. It's about creating characters that the crowd cares about and has an emotional investment in, it's also about working hard to entertain the fans and that's where I really have respect for wrestlers over MMA fighters: the working. When you're the top man, the top draw of your company, it's your job to make sure the fans who paid to see you never go home disappointed. No matter who you're facing, it's your duty to give the fans an entertaining match. Just look at Flair in the days of territories way back when. Not only was it his job as the NWA World Champion to have a good match with whoever, but he also had to make them look like a legitimate threat to the NWA title, no matter who they were.
I'm not an MMA, fan but I do understand that they train hard and obviously it takes an immense amount of toughness to make in MMA, but what the general public doesn't get is that MMA and wrestling are two entirely different animals and comparing them is really like apples and oranges. It doesn't take just a random string of moves to be a good professional wrestler, it takes an ability to tell stories and give the fans what they want. And I would like someone who mocks wrestlers for not being "real athletes" to go five minutes with a pro wrestler in the ring. I don't think a lot of people could make it through the five minutes in a competitive match.
I remember Flair telling a story form his younger days when he was getting ready for a match and a veteran then asked him what kind of a match he was going to have, and Flair answered that he has 9 minutes tonight. Then veteran then asked Flair: "Well, how are you going to use those 9 minutes to give these fans what they want to see?" And that pretty much sums it up for me.

Moved since it's a wrestling thing in general, rather than anything WWE specific.

The reason why wrestling takes so much flak is because it spent 70+ years aggressively trying to make everyone think it was real.

Jeff Jarrett put it best in The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling, "For those that believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation will do."
