I know Santino is drifting along pretty steadily as the lowcard comedy act, but could he ever be anything serious again? Or at the very least, something to challenge for the IC or US championships again? Granted, his stock's plummeted since he started being the go-to RAW guest host interactee, but still. Could a heel turn, an attire change, could anything make the monobrowed maniac a serious threat to anything?

TNA did it with Eric Young, it's plausible that WWE could do it with Santino.

He's an incredible performer. If prompted right, there's no doubt in my mind that he could do it. Same thing with Nick "Eugene" Dinsmore. You don't make so much out of so little and then just be completely tapped out in one run.
Anything can happen in the WWE.

He starts dating another diva that cheats on him. That would be the way to do it best, I think.

Jim Cornette has slapped around lots of other big guys and other tough guy wrestlers backstage before. He basically knew that if a Wrestler hit him back, all the other wrestlers will turn on him. Plus Cornette was usually always a booker of some sorts and it's never good idea to hit the guy who is in charge of your job.

But he is still very lucky considering what COULD have happened, which would have been Cornette eating the floor.

Have him turn heel. Or have him partner up with a Diva or a tag partner, and have a feud in which that person gets completely beat up by whoever he is feuding with. Have a huge serious promo about it, and allow him to break out some of his martial arts skills in matches.

I'm a fan and would like to see him pushed even if he keeps a bit of comedy (a la Y2J) but I fear he will be FE'd soon....in a recent interview he made when the WWE Santino/Kozlov sitcom was annoucned, he made noises about how he saw himself as more an actor than a wrestler and wanted to go down that career path...given how the WWE dislikes wrestlers to talk about potential non wrestling careers too much (I believe that was Maria's undoing) I will be happily suprised if he's still in the WWE come 2011.

In My Opinion, no. It will be like trying to take mysterio serious as a heel. Fixed so I can understand what the heck you just said. But seeing how he was as Boris Alexiev, sure. It worked with Kurt Angle. Remember how in 1999 and 2000 he was a goofball? Same exact thing. Look at him now.

It can be done.
One week, he wrestles Swagger and loses. After the match, Santino just sits mid ring for a few moments and shakes his head, before leaving.
The next week, he does his usual interaction with the guest host, but seems to be a little distracted/put off by the whole thing. Later, he wrestles Carlito and after giving him a good battle, he loses. Like the previous week, his collects himself after the match and this time seems a bit beside himself.
The following week, he's with the guest host again, but this time he isnt there for wacky antics. He wants a rematch against Carlito. The guest host cracks about Santino's win/loss record. Santino stares momentarily before walking off. Carlito narrowly beats Santino this time, via roll-up and a handful of tights.
Like the previous weeks, Santino mopes around the ring. Carlito takes this chance to grab an apple, spin Santino around and spit it right into his face. Santino wips the apple residue off his face and proceeds to drill Carlito with a headbutt to the nose. He then hits a flurry of kicks to a downed Carlito. He gets a chair and proceeds to lay into Carlito several times, before slamming the chair down and storming off.
The next week, Carlito is angered and demands a match asainst Santino. Before the match, Todd Grisham catches up with Santino. When asked about last week, Santino (in an unusually serious tone) simply says he's tired of being a puchline and that tonight, he's going to make a statment to the fans by taking down Carlito.
Carlito can barely get into the ring before Santino attacks him. The match is dominated by Santino, who wins with fujwa armbar submisson.
From there you just have Santino establish himself as a submission expert with an edge.

I'm sure it could be done. Make him disappear for a few months, then give him a few promos where he explains how he's sick of being used as comic relief, how he had a lot of time to think about his role and finally decided he would take this whole thing seriously, trained hard, and so on.
Look at Festus - Luke Gallows. A 180 turn which somehow is believable, because the wrestler and the guys backstage want to make it work.

A serious, monster Santino would be released within a month. He'd be just like Vance Archer, Koslov, Ezekiel Jackson etc etc. and there'd be no place for him.

He could stand to look like more of a threat at times, but I'd rather not see him become a generally serious character. I like his current incarnation too much.

Keep the character - outside the ring. In the ring he suddenly kicks the ever-loving you-know-what out of his opponents, then goes back to being funny.
