Akeem the African Dream made to spoof Dusty Rhodes' "American Dream" persona. That gimmick confused the hell out of me as a little kid who watched only sunday morning WWF. Only -now- do I get that it was an American Dream parody.

I have to say, regarding that Joey Styles comment on New Jack, I find the idea of New Jack doing ANYTHING in the name of good wrestling hilarious.

During the Raw where they had the ECW wrestlers there, when the bWo came out, Vince said they were clearly parodying the popular nWo CLOTHING LINE! I thought that was actually one of the better jabs to come from that time.

Some of you guys need to learn the difference between "shot at" and "homage to". I'd hardly call Black Machismo a shot at Savage, as Lethal apparently has the blessing of Savage, and it's done wonders at getting him over. and I'd argue that the bWo is an homage to classic wrestlers at the time...and that one time, KISS.

Doesn't 90% of what TNA does fall under this category? Really? 90%? Someone mentioned Black Machismo. I don't think that counts as a pot shot, it's more of a homage. By all counts, Lethal actually got Savage's blessing to do the gimmick.

Unless the thread's only about shots at other wrestling promotions, I'm a little surprised that no one's mentioned Right To Censor being WWE's shot at the Parents Television Council(or as I like calling those pieces of garbage, the Parent Trash Cult)?
I remember reading an interview that Steven Richards did in World of Wrestling magazine that he actually joined the group to get their propaganda as research.

Just a reminder. That must have been why they weren't mentioned at all. Sorry. Should I edit my previous post?

I'll try my best to dance around politics here. I think the WWF's beef with the PTC at the time was the oversexed product and language that accompanied it. The PTC were upset with that and made their opinion known.

I remember WWE said Umaga wasn't an average Joe. I totally get it, because Samoa Joe is in TNA, and the term 'Average Joe' doesn't apply to Umaga who works for the WWE. Boy, WWE is quite clever.

One of the few things that I really remember quite well as far as definitive pot-shots at the "other guys" would have to be the CONSTANT harping back around 96-97 by JR that the WWF was not a "seniors tour" and that you'd not see two geriatric old men halfheartedly grappling in a cage match on their programming!
There was also, as has been mentioned, the "Fake Razor" and "Pseudo-Diesel" that JR brought out on RAW, I suppose to make the point that neither man amounted to more than their WWF gimmick. Guess he was wrong on that one. ;D

I thought someone in this thread had mentioned WCW showing commericals of Vader getting beat by WCW mainstays when Vader debuted in WWE. I remember that they also did the same with Stone Cold Steve Austin, but I'm unsure if there was a commerical of Mick Foley. Would Goldberg challenging Stone Cold on the Tonight Show count as a shot against WWE? One of the few things that I really remember quite well as far as definitive pot-shots at the "other guys" would have to be the CONSTANT harping back around 96-97 by JR that the WWF was not a "seniors tour" and that you'd not see two geriatric old men halfheartedly grappling in a cage match on their programming! Later on, DX cut a promo where Shawn Michaels was going to declare himself "The Wrestling God" and Triple-H interrupts him, ending with "You had better be able to walk on water before you expect anyone to watch 'Age In The Cage'!" Plus, during a street fight with Stone Cold vs. Brisco and Patterson, JR says, "Yeah, we got a Seniors Tour, but what the hell!"

I thought this was a fake Youtube video but then actually clicked through. I am BAFFLED that they would not only call their competition out numerous times, but actually mention Shawn Michaels' name like that. Are they trying to stay #2?

I also remember Hogan when he first went to WCW, the WWF Magazine had a feature on the DEATH of Hulkamania... complete with Yoko legdropping him.
The only visible part of Hulk was his boots.
