The Diamondbackss finish off the sweep of the LOLMets with a 4-3 win in 14 innings. Hisanori Takahashi tries to not suck later tonight. Two Mets had good nights offensively. Angel Pagan went 3-5 with a homer, double, walk & 2 runs scored while Carlos Beltran went 1-4 with an RBI single & a walk. I'd like to describe the night of the $80 million man Jason Bay. Jason went 0-6 with 4 K & is now: .257/.346/.403. Conversely, Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday, who was a FA last offseason, is: .309/.389/.543. Clearly, Holliday has been the superior player by all measures(WAR, HR, RBI, etc). Jon Niese started, & suffered a vase of homeritis. Line: 5 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 HRs, 1 BB, 6 Ks, 7 swinging strikes, 5:4 GB:FB on 99 pitches(63-36). He essentially matched Dan Haren pitch-for-pitch, so no complaints there. The image of Manuel above is a result of his abhorrent managing. Back during the 20-inning game against St. Louis, he had K-Rod throw 100 pitches in the bullpen before bringing him in for the save. It didn't get as far tonight, but K-Rod was up & tossing 4 times without being put into the game. And who was brought in instead of Frankie: Yup, instead of bringing in your best option, Jerry goes to his worst. Amazingly enough, Perez didn't allow a run despite not being able to find the strike zone. He got helped by Arizona hitters swinging away with the bases loaded. If they took pitches, like they should've, they might've gone home earlier. After Perez is pulled, is it K-Rod Time? Nope, he goes to an even worse option(yes, worse than Ollie), Fernando Nieve. Nieve is horrendous, but yet he's still on the roster. He got into this game when Manuel double-switched Ike Davis out the game & had Alex Cora play first. Yes, that Alex Cora with the .553 OPS over Ike Davis, one of your better hitters. He eventually gave up the winning run in the 14th. Why Jerry(& I'm sure other managers as well) are so obedient to the "save" statistic is ridiculous. Why go to your worst relievers in extra innings instead of your best one? It's astounding really. Basically, this picture by Pat Andriola of FanGraphs(via Amazin' Avenue) sums up Jerry Manuel's bullpen strategy:

THE INDIANS STILL WILL NEVER LOSE AGAIN This always seems to happen when they're dead and buried and out of the playoff picture. They start playing like a world-class team. Or when they play the White Sox.

I'm kinda afraid of what the Mets might get for Francouer because I don't know what team need his services that badly. Maybe I just have little faith in them actually getting somebody good; as much as they need pitching, I hope they can get a hot bat to wake up the rest of the ice cold team.
It's sad that the only silver lining I can find is that the Phillies are losing just as badly as them right now.

Being an Os and Nats fan is just depressing. It really is. You always hear about there being light at the end of the tunnel but I don't see it with the Orioles. All that young talent and nothing has clicked.

They're absolutely playing their worst baseball of the year right now, but odds are good that means they're going to bounce back a bit, especially since they have one of the top 3 easiest schedules in the NL from August-September. HOWEVER, I don't think we're going to October baseball this year, for obvious reasons. Still, this year was a big step forward for the Mets, because, for the first time (like I said before) since the mid 1980's, we're finally turning back into a team that uses it's farm system to it's potential. This was a growing pains year (and some real pains year, considering what's gone down with Jose and Carlos), but next season Davis and Niese are a year older/more experienced, Thole is most likely ready, we'll have a full year of Pagan, Meija's another year closer, and there's every chance that Reese Havens/Reuben Tejada will put an end to the long, national nightmare known as "The Luis Castillo Years". So yeah, I don't have high hopes any longer for this season, but I feel better about the long term health of this franchise than I have in maybe my entire fandom life (watching since about 1990 as a kid).

Recent Notes on the Pirates:
GM Neal Huntington was quoted on his radio show with the following: "We will be perceived as incompetent until the team wins. Then we will be called geniuses by those same people."
The highest paid player (at $5mil for this season) is in Triple A. Not because of injury...but because he has bad knees (THAT YOU KNEW ABOUT) and has struggled so badly you wanted to bring up a prospect.
Neal Huntington, Pirates GM will now be refered to as Neal Huntington, Super Genius. ~~~
"We set the playoffs as a goal, not as a prediction. Have we lost more games than we expected? Yeah, we have." ~ Neal Huntington, Super Genius
There is more to that quote...but that's where I stopped. Yes. It is better in context: We set the playoffs as a goal, not as a prediction.
"Have we lost more games than we expected? Yeah, we have. How do we overcome that? We need to play good, sound, fundamental baseball… Wins and losses are an outcome. How we play the game is the process. And that’s our focus, the process, and how we help these guys get better. If we take care of the process, the results will take care of themselves"
Kind of.
~~~
Finally...
Texas recently inquired about Joel Hanrahan, and the Pirates countered by asking for flamethrowing 22-year-old Neftali Feliz, who is currently in the Rangers' bullpen and averaging more than a strikeout per inning while limiting opponents to a .195 batting average.
My Comment: Next time, just say "No" instead of sounding like an idiot. Neal Huntington, Super Genius, strikes again.
Cole's gonna have to pitch a CG shutout, if not the Cards will have 9 in a row. The Phils offense is just putrid right now. Howard and Polanco are the only two guys doing anything.
Now all you need is starting pitching.
@amyknelson MLB just announced it will test minor league players for HGH, effective immediately. They will be blood tested. That is big.
@amyknelson Don't know details, but I would guess that would exclude 40-man players, since they are part of union.
@amyknelson The minor leaguers have no union, as was the case in 2001, they could do nothing when Selig instituted drug testing then...
@amyknelson no he is part of the union. RT @mnmcglynn @amyknelson Finally & great news. If a MLB player is on a rehab assignment could he get tested??
@amyknelson Don't know how many minor leaguers use it, b/c it's pretty $. But the precedent has been set to blood test, that is why this is so big.
@amyknelson u read my mind, just tweeted that. RT @str8edgeracer @amyknelson isn't hgh ridiculously expensive? Minor leaguers make 1200-2500 a month
So I picked up a copy of MVP 2005 a few days ago, and now I can't get "Tessie" by Dropkick Murphys out of my head. I know it's about the damn hell ass Red Sox, but it's so damn hell ass catchy.
Also, I plan on editing all the fictional minor leaguers into Hall of Famers and All-Stars, and making the biggest damn hell ass Legends save ever.
Additionally, the game has Cleveland Stadium and the 1989 Indians uniforms, so you can bet your damn hell ass that I'm creating a Major League save.
Nah, I'll be generous and give him a 5. Should I create the Wesley Snipes WMH who's a terrible baserunner, or the Omar Epps WMH who thinks he's a power hitter? And is there a crappy enough pitching delivery in the game for me to accurately create Ed Harris?
Cole Hamels outpitches Adam Wainwright and STILL gets a no decision!!! 8IP 1H 0R 0ER
Over Cole's last 3 starts he is 1-0 with a 0.40era in over 22 innings. It's sickening he's only 7-7 with the way he's pitched this year. I lost count on how many times he's lost 1-0 or 2-1 or got a no decision after giving up 0 or 1 run. He could easily be 12-4 right now.
But we'll take just about anyone at this point. Maybe he'll be a throw in for a slightly bigger deal. Someone on another board was wondering if he and perhaps a prospect or 2 could get dealt for say B.J Upton and Andy Sonnastine.
