Previous thread: officialfan.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=offtopic&action=display&thread=291215Something interesting happened in the Reds/Mets game. With the bases loaded & no outs, Scott Rolen was called out on a foul tip initially as the umpire ruled it hit the end of his bat. However, the umpires conferred & ruled that Rolen was in fact hit by the pitch(replay showed it to be true) & he was rewarded first instead. Naturally, the Mets were fuming & Jerry Manuel was ejected. Does anyone recall any other situation where the umpires overturned a strikeout & instead ruled it a HBP? *And Pelfrey imploded after this incident.

Game 1 of the 3-game series goes to the Reds as they win a contentious 8-6 game over the Mets. Johan Santana starts tomorrow, while the Reds will have to find someone to fill in due to Aaron Harang's back spasms. Starring tonight for the Mets on offense were Angel Pagan & David Wright. Angel went 2-5 with a homer while Dubs went 2-4 with a triple & a BB. But for as good as they were, they weren't as good as All Star snub Joey Votto. All Joey did tonight was go 3-4 with 2 homers, a double & a BB while playing stellar defense at first base. He's been having an MVP-season for the 1st place Reds and tonight only added to his case. LOL at Manuel for thinking Ryan Howard was more deserving to be an All-Star than Votto. The person Mr. Votto was damaging tonight was Mike Pelfrey. Call it a bad start, regression to his mean, or whatever, but he was abhorrent this evening. His line: 4.2 IP, 9 hits, 7 runs, 4 BB, 1 K, 6 swinging strikes, 8:5 GB:FB on 92 pitches(54-38). It seems as if Mike has hit a wall his past couple starts, so the break will be kind to him. Starting in place of the injured Aaron Harang was rookie lefthander Travis Wood, who was starting on 3 days rest. His line: 4.2 IP, 6 hits, 5 runs(3 earned), 2 BB, 5 Ks, 12 swinging strikes, 5:4 GB:FB on 98 pitches(66-32). The top of the 5th inning was the story of this game. With the bases loaded & no outs, Scott Rolen was called out on a foul tip initially as the umpire ruled it hit the end of his bat. However, the umpires conferred & ruled that Rolen was in fact hit by the pitch(replay showed it to be true) & he was rewarded first instead.* Naturally, the Mets were fuming & Jerry Manuel was ejected. However, Mike Pelfrey lost his composure on the mound, not at all helped by this 0-1 pitch call against Drew Stubbs. Pelfrey's top of the 5th went like this: single, single, walk, HBP, K, single, double & a 2-run triple to the pitcher before getting pulled. Going forward, it would benefit Mike greatly if he improved on his K/9, which stands at 5.69, below the league average rate of 7.04. In injury news, Raul Valdes was called up to take the place of an injured Fernando Tatis. And Carlos Beltran went 1-2 with a BB playing in CF tonight. Here's the play in question.

I really hate it when people say that fans shouldn't vote for the ASG and things of that nature. What is the All-Star Game? Its an exhibition purely for the fans. So what if some deserving players don't get in every once in a while. The fans have all the right to see a game with their favorite players, even if it isn't the greatest statistical matchup. Is it a popularity contest? Sure is, and no one really tries to hide it. Its a big popularity contest, but that's what is fun about the ASG. Its the only time that you can see all the big names on the diamond at one time. I still love the charm in that, even after all these years.

I had to wait to come home today to watch last night's Red's game. Every home run for Mr. Votto is an official middle finger to the All Star Game. Please people, vote that man in!

Yeah, if it actually mattered and the BEST players made it, the roster would be a whoooooole lot different on both sides, fan voting and the rest.

If any Toronto Crappers are going to the Blue Jays/Red Sox game on Saturday, Trish Stratus will throw the opening pitch. I got Santino when I was there back in May.

Home Run Derby participants this year: David Ortiz, Corey Hart, Robinson Cano, Vernon Wells, Matt Holliday, and Miguel Cabrera.
Calling a Corey Hart win for maximum hilarity.
I hope this doesn't ruin Cano's swing.

And why four AL players to only two NL players? Maybe I wanted to see Adrian Gonzalez participate?

What once was an exciting event for the fans in attendance and for the audience watching on television has now become tedious and boring. Also, like the Dunk Contest, the stars are no longer interested in participating, so the league has to scramble to find participants, which is how we wind up with Matt Holliday and Robinson Cano.* * - Don't get me wrong about Cano. He's a great hitter. But a guy who can hit for average doesn't always translate to a guy who can slug the ball 400 feet and give the crowd a show. Kevin Youkilis is hitting just shy of .300, but I can't say I'd be doing cartwheels in excitement because Youk is in the Derby. ** - I don't know why, but I have this gut feeling that if any of these participants is going to take home the Brandon Inge Goose Egg Award for hitting no homers in the Derby, I think the odds-on favorite is Hart. I'm not sure why, but I just feel like he's the best bet to go 0-for.

But he's Willie goddamn Mays.

Nobody really sticks out as someone who has absolutely no right to play in the Game. And besides, the starters are only in for the first three innings, and that's about as much as the casual fan will watch. It's not like we'll see Joe Mauer, Albert Pujols or Evan Longoria batting in the seventh or eighth inning. I actually think the managers and players botched the All-Star selection way more than the fans did. I've already been down the road with how much of a farce it is that Omar Infante is an All-Star, but you can also make the case for Fausto Carmona, Arthur Rhodes, Alex Rodriguez, John Buck, Jose Bautista, Michael Bourn and Chris Young. Each one of those players are questionable selections, but each were selected by Joe Girardi, Charlie Manuel or the players.

The fan voting ALWAYS manages to be hilariously flawed with guys who have either missed a HUGE chunk of games, or guys that are big names but have hilariously underproformed I understand where people come from with the argument that it's the fan's game and they should get to see who they want. In basketball it's a much more legit argument, since in baseball, like it or not, we have that stupid ass home field stipulation. In that case, it's stops being the All Star exhibition and turns in to a game with consequence. You can't be starting someone who is on the effing DL or batting .210 if something is on the line. Even past that though, it irks me to see players exceeding expectations, especially ones with All-Star clauses, get totally ignored for washed up outfielder #25. I'm not pulling a Spreewell and saying these guys can't feed their families on $5.45 million instead of $5.47 million, but it's a matter of principle.

I despise the whole home field advantage thing. It's really lame when the team with the best record potentially ends up on the short end of the stick because of it. And yes, Im aware that the Red Sox benifited from it twice.

Johan Santana with a big-boy home run to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
Gary Cohen also filled the cup.
