Make that a 9-7 walkoff win in the 10th courtesy of Ryan Howard. Given how utterly crappy this game was going, this win was better than sex. I turned the channel to watch Smackdown after the 5th and turned it back just in time to see Cody Ransom hit the game tying homer. Awesome win! Once again though, Blanton was crapola. Maybe the break will help him. BTW. Hey Mets, feel free to beat the Braves anytime! K, Thx. I actually agree with him. Yadier Molina starting behind the plate for the NL is a joke. As much of an Utley fan as I am, I admit that Prado is having a better year and should have started ahead of him anyway, Utley's injury took care of that though.

Game 1 of the 3-game set goes to Atlanta as they beat the Mets 4-2. Tim Hudson & Mike Pelfrey pitch tomorrow.
For the Met offense, RA Dickey had 2 hits as did Angel Pagan. On the Atlanta side, Omar Infante(yes the All-Star Omar Infante) had 4 hits, including a HR.
Pitching for NY was RA DIckey, & he was good until the end of his outing. His line: 6.2 IP, 9 hits, 4 runs(1 unearned), 1 UIBB, 6 Ks, 8 swinging strikes, 2 HRs, 8:4 GB:FB on 119 pitches(79-40). His night ended roughly, as he gave up back to back homers to Infante & "DA MELK MAN!!!!!!!" On the other side was Tommy Hanson, who was dealing. His line: 5.2 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 BB, 6 Ks, 9 swinging strikes, 5:6 GB:FB on 94 pitches(64-30).
In other things, Jose Reyes looked to be in pain all night as his oblique strain is still affecting him. He should get a few days off, but that won't be happening. Also, Jerry Manuel bunting Josh Thole in front of Francoeur is an abhorrent move. In 4 at-bats, Jeff Francoeur saw 6 pitches. Thole has been hitting .500, albeit SSS, so giving away outs is a foolish move, especially with an awful hitter coming up(seriously, Jerry loves to call for the sac bunt in any situation). On the season, Francoeur is .255/.306/.395, & with Carlos Beltran returning next week, Francoeur has to hit the bench. And lastly, Yunel Escobar almost cost Troy Glaus to break his left wrist.
Edit: Oh, and Jason Bay is awful. You can have him back, Theo.

His right side is OK. Naturally, a smart team would let him rest 'til he's 100%, but the Mets are gonna keep playing him, & will let him play in the ASG on Tuesday.

YES! And I do know that it's a 9-3 ballgame, but seriously, at this point of early summer, it's the little things. And in regards to the Huff thing, BRV, you do realize that Marlon Byrd is probably the second best overall outfielder in the National League in 2010, right? Matt Holliday is the best in the NL, bar none. Aubrey Huff and Josh Willingham are having very good offensive years, but contribute little defensively. Pagan of the Mets and Torres of the Giants have been sneaky-good as 4th outfielder-types playing every day. Soriano, Ludwick, and Chris Young come to mind as having pretty solid seasons, including some decent defense from Fonzy. Rasmus, Hart, McCutchen, Werth, and Victorino are doing damage with the bat, but their defense appears to be less of a contribution than expected. Heyward's rookie season, and to a lesser extent Colvin's, merit mention. But really, no one other than Holliday has been better than Marlon Byrd. He has been a spectacular defensive player who has to be an early favorite for a Gold Glove. Only 1 error with 207 putouts; 3 assists; very good range. Furthermore, he's hitting .317/.360/.483 with 9 HR, 45 R, 37 RBI on a run-anemic team. If you have any interest in sabermetrics, Fangraphs' WAR numbers rank Marlon fifth among all Major League outfielders in value in 2010, behind Carl Crawford, Josh Hamilton, Matt Holliday and Andres Torres. Byrd is worth 3.2 wins above a replacement-caliber player (think Rajai Davis or Nyjer Morgan for replacement level). Huff has a case in so far as the "it counts" thing goes. Let's say the Red Sox are a terrible team some year and the Yankees are historically good. The Sox' fans could simply stuff the ballot box with the worst players possible (Saltalamacchia, check; Grudzielanek, check; Pie, check). It's the extreme/reductio ad absurdum argument. But the problem is more with "it counts" than fan selection. And Huff also has a case that he is more deserving of a bid than either Wilson or Lincecum this year. He has killed it out there in San Fran.

And the Cubs are making noises in LA...
2 in the 8th and, so far, 2 in the 9th. Aramis Ramirez has a single, double, and now a triple off of Broxton. Marlon Byrd is 4-5 with an RBI single off Broxton. Colvin up, Byrd on second. Colvin is the tying run with 2 outs.

one last thing mets are trying to aquire ted lilly I'm absolutely fine with that. I'd rather have Oswalt, but Houston seems adamant in their stance that they want a top hitting and pitching prospect, and if the Mets' finances are as screwy as it's being rumored, I don't blame them at all if they want to hold onto Meija and Wilmer Flores/Fernando Martinez. Lilly is a highly effective pitcher who'd likely find a good deal of success in CitiField, and his presence would put Takahashi back in the roll he belongs, bullpen long man and occasional set-up guy. Plus, Lilly isn't due much cash, is in the final year of his deal, isn't a 100% top flight elite arm (while still being very good), and thus he'd command much less in a trade. Again, I hope the Mets are investigating Oswalt as much as possible, but if it ends up being Lilly, and he walks at the end of the year to land the Mets a couple of high draft picks if things don't work out, I'll be just peachy with it. Also, news reports out of New York are saying that the Yankees are angry at the Mariners at the way the Lee deal was negotiated. One senior official is saying something like "This isn't the way the Yankees do business; if we say something is a deal, then it's a deal, period." Which is quite funny, since in 2002 David Wells had a contract in hand and a handshake agreement with the Diamondbacks, except he bailed at the 11th hour, at his wife's urging, when he got a late phone call from the Steinbrenners. You know those Yankees, bastions of business ethics and decency in Major League Baseball...I'm not even singling them out here, every team would do something like that in their position, but the hypocrisy is just too fun to point out.

Man, I didn't realize just how much Travis Hafner has fallen off a cliff.
Any real reason for this other than no more PEDs?

The Braves take Game 2 4-0 as they dominated the New York Mets this afternoon. Johan Santana v. Derek Lowe tomorrow as the Braves look for the sweep. The only Met worth mentioning on offense was Angel Pagan, who collected three more hits today. For Atlanta, All-Star Omar Infante had 3 hits & Tim Hudson helped his cause with 2 hits of his own. Starting for the Mets was Mike Pelfrey, & he was God-awful again. His line: 4 IP, 12 hits, 4 runs, 3 BB, 2 Ks, 5 swinging strikes, 8:2 GB:FB on 93 pitches(55-38). Maybe he's experiencing dead-arm or is regressing back to his norm, but he needs the All-Star break desperately. On the other side, Tim Hudson pitched will. His line: 7 IP, 4 hits, 2 BB, 3 Ks, 9 swinging strikes, 12:5 GB:FB on 92 pitches(58-34). Much has said about Tim's lack of strikeouts in relation to him allowing more contact, which invariably leads to more hits & runs. But, Hudson has a great ability to keep the ball on the ground so it probably won't affect him going forward. In other things, Jose Reyes is injured again. He left today's game after reaggravating his left oblique strain. I have no idea as to why he was playing through an injury instead of resting up. Also, Carlos Beltran will hit 4th in the lineup once he comes off the DL on Thursday.

I'm really hoping Atlanta can pull out the sweep. Going into the break 6 games up would be wonderful.
