Honestly, I'd like to see a more Tunney-like authority figure these days - someone who shows up on TV every once in a while to make the big decisions, but generally goes unnoticed and does not feud with the wrestlers. I know others have made this point before, so I know I'm not alone in thinking this.

Tunney was before we had the evil promoter. It probably wouldn't work anymore...

i used to genuinely believe that he was someone important, even with my knowledge of wrestling being 'fake', I thought his authority backstage was real. wasn't he just an agent or production guy or something like that?

His dad, Frank, ran the Toronto territory. Jack was basically just a dude they had on TV once in a while.

It seemed like a lot of his decisions was to stick it to the good guy.
He creeped me out, especially when he spent 15 minutes trying to build up the reason behind the WWF title tournament.

WWF needed an authority figure. He was useful at times in the storylines.

I believed in many angles as a kid watching the colorful WWF but I never once bought that Jack Tunney was anything more than a regional promoter. That president role was just so somone could annouce major decisions on television. This was before general managers and Vince would make big annoucements on TV.

What was the point of him? To be the first guy to use the word unequivocal when he ruled over Andre giving the belt to Dibiase. Than made A tourney at Wrestlemania in which Savage won. Other than the $5 word Unequivocal he never did much. it's a shame he didn't have more big words to use he tried henceforth in the same speech so the well must have ran dry after.
