What belt was Flair really using in 1991?
I'm watching Survivor Series from that year and even though it's blacked out you can clearly see a WWF logo on the strap.
I never really paid attention to that before.

A WWF Tag Team Championship belt. I've got a PWI at home with a picture of him holding it. I'll try and scan it tonight, I can't find it online.

Yeah, it was one of the old silver-ish tag team belts that were used up until '89 or so when they brought in the gold tag team belts.
Same one Mr. Perfect was given the night he won the I.C. title in 1990.
Of course, Flair did have the actual NWA big gold belt with him for a short time.

I think they did use the Big Gold Belt right away, until WCW filed an injunction against them or something.
Flair using the belt was great at the time, because it caused such a paradox for the announcers. They never acknowledged that WCW even existed, so they all acted like Flair just pulled the belt out of thin air.

I know on the Funeal Parlor segment it actually shows the big gold belt for a second. In the age of the internet this storyline would have been killed quick.

originally it was the wcw belt but eventually flair had to give it back. they used an old tag team belt for a while after that to keep the angle going.
bobby heenan saying comparing flairs belt to hogans belt was like comparing ice cream to horse manure is an all time classic line.

He carried the NWA belt for a while man. Heenan did tv with it for a few weeks while Flair was actually still considering going back to wcw/nwa.

Was he actually still considering going back or were they just waiting for Flair's NWA/WCW contract to terminate (i.e. no-compete clause of some variety)? I have a hard time believing that Vince would have Heenan go on TV with Flair's belt and talk about Flair being on the way if it wasn't guaranteed that he was coming.

As far as I can make out, In 1985, the NWA had the belt made for Flair which he used until 1991. When he left due to his very huge row with Jim Herd, flair demanded back his $25,000 deposit plus interest before he gave the belt back. Herd said that he wasn't paying Flair a thin dime, so flair, took his belt and went to WWE.
According to Flair, he was never paid his money (which amounted to $38,000), so he kept the belt for good, and gave it to Triple H as a gift.

Yip that's exactly what happened as Flair had put the deposit down and had not gotten it back he considered the belt his. Until WCW tried to sue WWF then he started using the old WWF tag team championship belt and WCW sued WWF again (as they were still calling Flair 'real worlds champion' in reference to WCW on WWF TV) Eventually WWF gave up on this storyline and had Flair win the WWF championship at Royal Rumble 1992. Which in a scense did make WCW look strong compared to WWF at that time. Why was Perfect awarded the same belt when he won the IC championship in 1990?

See, this is (one of thousands of reasons) why the Invasion angle never made any logical sense. Why were WWF wrestlers wanting WCW belts and WCW wrestlers wanting WWF belts? If Austin had to defect to WCW, he should have thrown down the WWF Championship and called it a worthless hunk of metal.

The IC belt just wasn't around at the time, for some reason. The Hart Foundation had a similar thing where they were shooting some promo shots as champions before they won the belts from the Bulldogs. Dynamite wouldn't give his belt to them for the shot, stating when they won them they could have it. So they shot the photos with one belt. Of course, that story is according to Diana Hart, so don't automatically believe it happened.

The belt Ric Flair carried was almost identical to the World Tag Team Championship, but it actually had three stars where the words 'Tag Team' are on the regular belt. IIRC it was made by Reggie Parks (who created the original World Tag Team belts and the other classic WWE belts of the 1980s).

Could be as simple as 'the belt was getting repaired.' Oddly, that's the second time Curt Hennig had to use a replacement belt; he carried the WCW Cruiserweight title belt with him to the ring at Halloween Havoc 97 and pretended it was the US Title.

Thanks to everyone for the answers.
Interesting stories here.
This can be an all purpose belt thread now that I have the answer to my question.

Actually it was the NWA belt not the WCW belt, WCW didn't exist until right before he left. Flair was stripped of the WCW World title but the NWA didn't strip him of their World title so, in actuality, Flair wasn't just carrying the belt, he was the actual recognized NWA champion. The NWA filed in injunction, probably in conjunction with WCW, and he sold the belt back to them.

Warrior's I-C belt had the white or blue leather at the time, and the WWE wanted to get that changed before awarding it to the new I-C champ.

Just saying that Hennig was known for forgetting to bring his belt with him. (And Warrior's I.C. belt was yellow)
