Dudes, don't worry about being a n00b in TF2. I had the same worry when I started playing a few months ago (I even made a thread about) it, and my fears were unfounded. Most people on public servers are pretty laid back and won't hate on you for being ignorant or inept, and with full-size teams it's not like you're going to drag your team down too much by yourself. Anybody who lets fear of n00bishness keep them from playing TF2 is cheating themselves. It's really well balanced, and with nine different classes, you're pretty much guaranteed to find a niche or at least something you can do halfway decently while you get a feel for things. Yeah, you're right. As long as you can tough it out in the beginning and deal with not knowing what the hell you're doing, you're bound to improve. You won't magically get better without going through some tough times. BTW, Psy, have you played Torchlight? Seems like a Diablo-esque game and has gotten terrific reviews. Steam has it for $10 and I'm thinking of getting it, even though I've never played the Diablo series (or similarly-styled RPGs for that matter). Never heard of Torchlight but I hate-hate- hate Steam so that's a no-go for me.

torchlight from what I've seen is an evolved form of diablo, but with a handy "make game into a rougelike" button. If by "evolved" you mean there is shared loot and a pet, then yes, it's evolved. Aside from that it is virtually Diablo with updated graphics and a lack of multiplayer.

Apparently I can be my own google. Since it's available elsewhere than Steam, maybe I"ll give it a shot.

Wait, no multiplayer? BOO!
Just youtube'd it... yeah, doesn't look my sort of thing, not without multiplayer.
I played Titan Quest as well, that was a freaking awesome game to play multiplayer and singleplayer.... really shined in multi- though.

The Torchlight crew is working on a free-to-play MMO set in the same universe. It's due out in eighteen months to two years. In the meantime, Torchlight is a great single-player experience and it's a bargain at the usual price of $20, let alone $10. I'm taking a break from it right now though, as my Alchemist was getting chewed up in the Black Palace, so I need to backtrack and grind up a couple levels and perhaps reconsider my build/tactics before going deeper into the abyss...

Played the Torchlight demo and I thought it was really fun. Nice visuals, the explosions and attacks are colorful and impressive, whole lot of loot, and really easy to get into. I don't really care if it's single-player only. For $10, that's an absolute steal IMO. Seems like something that could take up a good chunk of my time. And I really like how your pet can go to town and sell any spare loot. Talk about convenient.
As for Steam itself, I understand the criticisms (can't resell games, tied to your account, etc.). But I love the convenience of being able to download a game and delete it whenever you like, without fear of losing a hard copy. And they tend to have a lot of nice deals/bargains.

On TF2 all I gotta say is this, if you are on Defense, or hell even offense and you see that there are two people playing Spy or Sniper DON'T GO SPY OR SNIPER! Ah, the two classes that are the bane of my existence. I suck as them and I suck against them. On TF2 I realize that I find that I'm pretty decent with Heavy, Pyro, Soldier, and Engineer.

I was just in a Payload game on the BLU (offense) team, and we had FOUR PEOPLE playing Spy...and then they wondered why we couldn't move the cart. I was a near full-time Pyro player for a long time, with occasional stints as an Engineer when I was in a more cerebral mood. Recently I've started playing Soldier a lot, coincidentally with the Soldier/Demo war event. I'm also thinking of trying to hone my Medic skills.

And I don't get the reselling criticism. since when, if ever, could you re-sell a pc game that has to verify a CD key? once the key is used, isn't it basically tied to that computer/ISP?

Nah, for the most part, you can use the same CD key on multiple computers for multiple installs without a problem. The only time I think there might be a problem is under this example: You buy a game that has multiplayer, install it, sell it to someone else, and leave the install on your computer. That might create problems if the new owner tries to install it and play online (same CD key on two PCs at same time could throw up a red flag). But other than that, and perhaps some DRM-related instances that I'm not aware of, there isn't a problem with reselling PC games. BTW, I spent about an hour and a half on Torchlight, and it's extremely addictive. I wasn't even making progress in the story. Just going through the first dungeon, level by level, killing creatures and picking up loot. It's so simple, yet I found myself unable to stop.

It just is weird to me why some pc gamers are unwilling to go over to companies like D2D or Steam for pc games. I mean hell, D2D is the only place you can get gridrunner evolution! www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-gridrunner-revolution/17-1488/look at how crazy that game is!

I had a seizure watching that clip. Intense ;D
And I can't stop playing Torchlight. Played through the storyline, now working on the Shadow Vault, which is apparently a dungeon with endless floors and enemies that increase in difficulty as you progress. So much fun.
BTW, for anyone who does use Steam, they should be having their Winter Sale in the coming days. Everything in the store will be 10-90% off, with some games as little as $1. Great way to pick up a handful of titles for cheap.

I'm playing the excellent world of goo at the moment, it's really charming stuff and is good at keeping the basic concept fresh by adding new elements.

World of Goo was great. Got it for about $5 a couple months ago and it was a very enjoyable experience. Easy to get into, but still provides a challenge here and there. The visual style is beautiful.

Oh man, that's more games than I'd know what to do with.
They've also got the original STALKER for $2. An older title, but one of the best PC-exclusive games of the last 3 years IMO. A brilliant game.

A brilliant game. they also have all the ubisoft games at 50% off which I then used to buy the ghost recon complete pack for 20 bucks.

The MMORPG Age of Conan now has a trial that lets you play characters up to level 20 for free forever. It's a holiday special and you need to download the game and create the account before Jan 1 though.
It took me all day to download but hey free is free.

I got a new laptop, so to celebrate I went ahead and got Torchlight when it was 10 bucks, and GTA Vice City on Steam. I've always wanted to finish it, but the quality of my Xbox version has been degrading over the years so I just got it new. I also got Dragon Age: Origins as an early Christmas present and played it for 7 hours straight last night. I've also got Oblivion lying around somewhere, and I had the Orange Box, but my Steam account was taken over by my stepdad so I had to start a new one, the one I bought Torchlight and GTA on.
