Long story short, my Grandpa (Syd Kirkby) was an Antarctic explorer and a relatively famous one. Between 1961 and 1965, he surveyed more Antarctic territory than any other explorer. He's got all of the stuff named after him. * Mount Kirkby in the Porthos Range of the Prince Charles Mountains * Kirkby Head on Tange Promontory in Enderby Land, near the Russian Molodezhnaya Station * Kirkby Shoal in Newcomb Bay, near Casey Station, Shirley Island, Windmill Islands * Kirkby Glacier on the eastern boundary of Australian Antarctic Territory in the Trans Antarctic Mountains, Oates Land
So, are you related to anyone famous?

Noone recognizable, really. One of my direct great+ grandfathers was Christian Knauss, a Civil War "hero" for the North that has a sword in the William Penn museum. I use hero in quotes, because honestly... noone has any idea on how he earned it. But apparently, it was a pretty big deal as it's decorative with gold, silver and jewels.
There was another relative who was locally famous for some time as a horse thief in the area. Turned out when my dad and grandfather started doing research that he was adopted as a teen after he was caught with two adults in a horse thieving gang. One of our relatives claimed he was too young to be hanged and offered to take him in. Apparently as an adult, he decided to go back to stealing horses.

George B. McClellan. He was in the Civil War. And had an Army base named after him in Alabama which was the former location of the MP school and is no longer an active base, but is used by police agencies in Alabama for urban training.

One of my little cousins is one of the best Irish Dancers in the world. Her name is Jillian Oury, and according to YouTube, some news sites, and my aunt, she's one of the best Irish Dancers in the world.
Makes me feel bad I used to torture her so much while I visited them in Chicago when I used to go visit their family.

Does anyone remember those commercials where a guy in a cowboy hat would stick a fork in a bowl of chili and it would stand up? He's my mom's cousin.

I'd say "The Friendly Giant" but I don't think the Yanks would know him (or Dressup either). If it's Mr. Dressup - that's so cool!!! I'm related to Wilbert Coffin, one of the last people executed in Canada (a strange case): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilbert_CoffinI am also distantly related to Noah Webster (of Webster's Dictionary fame): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noah_Webster

Although I'm pretty sure it's just legend, I may be a distant relative of Al Capone.

King James the 4th of Scotland. I'm his 13x direct great grandson. I don't remember much about my family's genealogy, but I distinctly remember being told it goes back to Scottish royalty in some fashion. So we might be related.

Descended from miscellaneous Eastern European immigrants - so none that I know of. It'd take some serious digging through name changes to find anything, probably.
Anyone know of a good geneology search engine? Preferably free? I'd rather not pay for Ancestry.com.
