Other than Vince and those employed by Vince, I don't know anyone that refers to wrestling as "Sports Entertainment." All wrestling fans call it wrestling, non-wrestling fans call it wrestling, even kids that have only been exposed to "Sports Entertainment" still refer to it as wrestling. The term "Sports Entertainment" has never made any since anyway, since technically all sports are forms of entertainment, so it's a bit redundant.
Now that kayfabe is returning in some forms do you think we will at least have them refer to wrestling as though it is a legit sport rather than "Sports Enertainment."

It's always been sports entertainment to Vince, since that's what brings in the best money. You can't really take pro wrestling seriously as a legit sport when you've got giant turkeys, evil deans, and magicians who jack their opponents' underwear, can you? Or public castrations and hand births, for that matter.
The brand of "sports entertainment" WWE runs now is hugely marketable to kids, as Hulkamania was, and the climate's just too different for another Attitude Era. Why try to fix what ain't broke, bottom line-wise?

WWE only uses the "sports entertainment" shctick to push away from the "wrestling" aspect for the media. I have and always will call it wrestling or like my grandperents call it rasslin. Besides do you really see wrestling anyway? its always 100 mins of entertaining talking and 20 mins of competitive touching ang shoving.

Wrestling could be as socially acceptable as american football and baseball tomorrow and no one would ever call it sports entertainment.

The bigger question is that when Triple H/Steph take over will they keep using the Sports Entertainment name. I say yes even though HHH is supposedly a "wrestling traditionalist."

WWE will always be 'Sports Entertainment'. That's just how it's presented.

The way I see it - the stuff that happens in the ring; wrestling = sport.
The stuff that happens OUT of the ring; the interviews, the backstage brawls, the storylines, the promo's = entertainment.
Put it that way and it kinda makes sense.

It's WWE's way of owning their form of pro wrestling.

20 mins of competitive touching ang shoving. Forget "sports entertainment" AND "pro wrestling". It needs to be renamed "Competitive Touching and Shoving" NOW.

I always thought that the Sports Entertainment phrase was brought around so the sports state commissions would leave the WWF the hell alone.

I don't understand why this is a big deal to many people. Vince McMahon used it to avoid paying taxes. There is still wrestling in the ring, but with interviews, skits, etc..While there is more entertainment than wrestling compared to the 70s, the format hasn't changed at all. Sports Entertainment is just an empty label.

I was watching the original broadcast of the first Wrestlemania the other day and was surprised to hear the announcer at the start talking over the ident say "the recognised symbol of excellence in sports entertainment" So I doubt he's going to drop it any time quickly.

Vince isn't going to drop it anytime soon but the fans have never and will never refer to WWE as "sports entertainment." It's just too stupid to say. No one in the right mind has ever said "I am going to watch sports entertainment tonight."
What makes it silly is that there are other forms of sports entertainment and wrestling falls under that umbrella. How about stuff like American Gladiators?

I don't like the fact that wrestling is something of a dirty word, but sadly it's true. It carries a "rube" stigma, and I think just due to wrestling's nature (including when it takes itself seriously), it can't be helped.
I'll admit WWE could stand to throw the word "wrestling" around more during the shows when it's the most appropriate. But I get why they generally market themselves as "sports entertainment", so it doesn't bother me.

Meh, purists fans always tend to be purists, but in the end of the day, the WWE is as much sports entertainment as the JCP, the only diference is that one was more focused on the storylines and the other one in the matches, but in the end of the day, all the companies had both things
At least I always had the feeling that wrestling fans hate the word Sports Entertainment because it reminds them how Wrestling is not a real sport, sometimes it feels like the would kill to make wrestling a ''real sport'' again, but it doesn't matter how much they want to blame Vince about killing the sport, sooner or later everybody knew that wrestling is not a real sport, even if they tried to make it feel like a real sport
Also, isn't like Vince try to always avoid the word, I remember at F4W, that when vince opened the show, he said ''enjoy the wrestling show'' not ''enjoy the sports entertainment show''
It always in the context of when they use the word, other sports said ''the greateast atlete in the history of sports'' but never mentioning the discipline
Now, it's true that he should say more wrestling instead of sports entertainment, but in the end, is something very trivial, in the end people still know and refer to the product as wrestling, and vince isn't trying to change that, he only doesn't want to be related with ''rasslin'' at all

I doubt it. He's been using it since at least the first Mania like someone said. It's never caught on though and it never will.

The only time it really bothers me is the video games, where they literally never, ever say "wrestling" or "wrestlers." It isn't as pervasive on TV as people make out, or JBL wouldn't have gotten away with calling himself "A wrestling GAAAAWWWWD!" for years.

McMahon will never, ever, EVER give up on the term "Sports Entertainment" and it's purely for legal reasons. He doesn't want to get sued if some dumbass kid jumps off a roof through a table and kills himself, so he calls it "Sports Entertainment" so that he can say "Hey, I never said it was real! We even indirectly admit that it's fake by calling it entertainment!" Unless it becomes impossible to sue an entertainer (which will NEVER happen) then WWE will NEVER start calling it wrestling again (no matter who runs the company).
