John Cena's humor is usually pretty horrible, but I got a kick out of that line, as well as Gabriel's reaction to it.

Gabriel's reaction was gold, but that line itself made me cringe. That whole promo infact was brutal.

I was waiting for the obligatory "not that there's anything wrong with that" qualifier. Glad Cena didn't say that line.

It was cheap, and completely below Cena. I know it is pro wrestling, but we should be really be past that at this point. It is like the go to, "I don't have any good insults" insult.

The show and Cena is geared towards kids. Kids make fun of each other by calling each other gay. Big deal.

I agree YAK, even though Gabriel isn't gay, Cena was saying it as if it were something to be ashamed of.

I sorta cringed at all of his jokes, except the Wendy's one. I legitimately laughed at that one because of how he said it.

If this were a scripted promo, then I certainly have a problem with it. If it were an off-the-cuff comment, then fair enough. But here's where the problem lies;
Cena is singling out every member of Nexus and finding a fault with them.
Otunga - famous for his girlfriend. Fair enough. Slater - Looks like the Wendy's girl. Fair enough. Barrett - mocks his accent and starts a you tapped out chant. Fair enough. Young - Looks like a black Cena. Fair enough. Sheffield - Looks dumb. Fair enough. Tarver - Looks like he works in a strip-joint. Fair enough. And Gabriel - Hints that he's gay. NOT cool.
Yes, this show is watched by millions of kids and yes, this just helps reinforce the idea that being gay is something a) wrong and b) to be mocked.
And I thought JBL is Poopy was bad.

Even my wife, who isn't remotely PC, thought it was really cheap and uncharacteristic for a stand-up guy like Cena.

I thought it was dumb, gay jokes are lame to begin with and there are soooo many other routes to take like call him Adam Lambert, Justin Beibers big brother or even a reject from the latest twilight flick, the "your gay lolz" is pretty lame for a guy who has writers

God, when did WC become such a prudish place?

God, when did WC become such a prudish place? it didn't. From what I've gathered, the internet consciously tries to look sensitive about LGBT issues. Racial and other issues are more acceptable to make fun of because they're not as hot-button.

Well, Alvarez on Observer Radio said that he's straight, and wouldn't reveal who he is dating on the air - probably is dating someone within the 'E. I thought that whole promo was god-awful, he buried each of them, and Slater, even though I don't like him, is never going to recover from that Wendy's likening.

It's not a running gag if it only happened once before the incident in question. Especially since the previous instance was less an insinuation that Gabriel was gay and more an idiot making an idiotic pun.

God, when did WC become such a prudish place? While they're unlikely to become foaming at the mouth axe wiedling homophobes based on one boring gay joke, there's still a bunch of naive kids in the audience drenched in orange and purple paying X amount of dollars for the privilege of seeing Cena speak and wrestle laughing at a guy who's just been accused of being gay. Stupid, macho and boring locker room mentality joke, not necessary and entirely out of place. It's wrestling though, so not surprising.
