So, I was thinking of this.. when it come sto doing covers, there has to be a balance. Some sound so much like the original, that there seems to be no point to it ala Megadeth's version of Paranoid (don't get me wrong,I love Megadeth)
Others sound NOTHING like it... I saw Lamb of God live, and they claimed to be doing a live cover of "Overkill" by Motorhead, but totally changed the riff, the drum beat,a nd his screaming made the lyrics totally unintelligble.
Then you have the UB40 effect.... pretty white boys covering older songs, slightly different and somehow getting famous from it.
To me, a succesful cover must still be easy to recognize, but also put enough of your own spin on it to make it worth while. Ala Metallica's "Turn the Page" cover. Thoughts?

Girls aloud, They take great songs and just butcher them.
Walk this way was the bigger offence though.

I liked Megadeth's version of Paranoid, prefer it to the original actually. It's a short, relatively fast tempo song, there's not a whole lot that you can do to make it different. Slow it right down maybe, but would that sound any good? And not really something Megadeth would do. They did change the guitar solo. I agree that it's better for a band to put their own unique spin on a cover, but with some songs changing it radically just for the sake of it wouldn't work.

It really depends because sometimes covers that sound close to the original aren't that bad (Kashmir for example), and others that sound completely different (You Were Always On My Mind) aren't too bad either. There are exceptions all around of course.
Raul Malo has done some covers where he turns the song into something else - Blue Moon, My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You, etc. I like them a lot.
It depends on my mood I suppose.
I will say that I detest with all my soul those god-awful covers that:
a) are "sung" by cats/dogs
b) are done by "cutesy" kid bands (stuff so corny even your grandparents would roll their eyes)
Those recordings should be destroyed.

I'm not the biggest fan of a cover when it's barely any different from the original song. If that's the case, I'd rather hear the original, thank you.
However, I detest covers that sound so different from the original, it might as well be a different song.
If the cover in question is done extremely well, whether it's almost a carbon copy or a completely different song, then I really don't care as long as I like it.

Slow it right down maybe, but would that sound any good? Type O Negative does a cover of Paranoid that's slowed way down. Is it any good? Well, Type O is an acquired taste to begin with, and their slow dirge stuff especially so, so I guess that's up to the listener. I dislike UB40-ing the most. Hawaiian radio is REALLY bad with it being done by local bands, Hawaiian-izing every good pop, rock, or metal song and turning them all into dull, harmonized crap.

UB40 had a lot of hits, just not in the USA. Red, Red Wine is pure perfection.

Just look at Faith No Mores version of War Pigs. Still sounds like the original but it's all cleaner sounding and it's even better than it.

Covers that sound barely different from the original, I can't stand Aerosmith's "Come Together." Don't even bother if you're not going to put your own unique spin on the song.
Though Todd Rundgren's "re-creation" of "Strawberry Fields Forever" is the exception to this rule.

I much prefer covers that sound different from the originals. I don't see the point in doing a recorded cover if you're not doing anything different with it.
Live is a different story. Sometimes it's just fun to play a cover.
