I don't know, the cpu reads your inputs like nothing, add to the fact that all their attacks had high priority, and that they could sometimes pull random shit like nothing

That said, it made me feel bad that such a ridiculously difficult (and broken) boss was always neglected in MK mass media. Goro and Motaro always got the attention. Going by my memory of a kid at the time, and having never played the actual arcade version, here's the simple reason: Most people pretty much saw him as a Goro rip off. Goro at the time was unique, especially in a game where the rest of the fighters at least LOOKED human (even if you had a lightning god, an undead wraith, and an ice ninja in the ranks). Then you get this four armed monstrosity there...yeah, that changes things up. In MK 3, you had a new unique one...in the form of a centaur. Kintaro...was Goro with different colorations and some different moves.

I could always stomach Kintaro better than Motaro.
With Kintaro, it seemed at least possible to develop a strategy to be him. For me, Shang Tsung was the best option. His triple fireball attack, if it didn't hit the big guy, always forced him to stop moving. Plus, he could always morph into anyone else who's attacks were effective.
Motaro on the other hand... All projectile attacks just went right through the son of a bitch. He moved like lightning, and his attacks were devastating. The only strategy I ever came up with was jump around like crazy and try to hit him with a dropkick. Then, if you're lucky, maybe he'll be stunned for, oh, half a second, and then maybe...MAYBE you can get a combo off. But he usually just ended up blocking it anyway.
So on the cheapness scale, Motaro is light years ahead of Kintaro.

Honestly, I always felt it was because there were almost no adaptations of MK2 back in the day, which is ironic given how popular it was. The movie was obviously based on the first game, but the next (horrible) movie and cartoon, among other stuff, all jumped immediately to the MK3 storyline. I always preferred MK2 over the third one.

Yeah... MKIII was where I lost interest in the series for the most part. The whole dash combo thing just turned the computer into super cheap combo machines, even worse then Killer Instinct. MKII I thought was the pinnacle of the series.

Never had too much trouble with him, but he did seem harder to beat than Shao Khan.

You guys must have forgotten about Onaga.
Invulnerable to projectiles, so you have to attack him close. And even when you attack him close, he doesn't even budge. You literally cannot knock the guy down. So even if you're lucky enough to get anywhere close to him to get off (maybe) one hit, he grabs you and beats the pus out of you, and flings you across the room.
Repeat until dead.

I had 3 characters I could usually beat him with ease with. Milena, Katana and Sub-Zero. If I played with anyone else...I'd get my ass handed to me. Baraka is another one that I could beat him with but it was met with mixed results. I always found it funny that Kintaro was like 10 times harder than Shao Khan. I can pretty much beat him with any character. He's such a talker that it doesn't take much to whip him. His taunts and saying "you will die" 100 times per round make him a pushover. Beat Kintaro once with Scorpion. Don't know how I did it but I did it.

Onaga was only hard because of the 3d plane... but yeah I still hated him all the same, Shao Khan never really got any harder after fighting Motaro and Kintaro

I remember that the trick to beat Kintaro was to knock him into the air and juggle him against the edge of the screen. Boring and cheap, but then again he was so cheap himself.

Haters this is for you
I liked Kintaro waaaaaaaay more than Goro. Maybe it was the tiger stripes Maybe that was the fun in facing him was the joy you got when you finally beat the bastard. Thats one of many reasons why I hope they release MK trilogy on PSN so I can play as Kintaro again.
I never heard that theory that or viewed Kintaro as a Goro rip off at all. Why doesnt Sheeva get the label as being a Goro rip off??? She basically is Goro with breasts.

I remember in the early versions of the arcade game, if you used Sub Zero and super freezed Kintaro in the middle of a round, the game would reboot. I don't know if you can count it as a win, though.

I think you had to hold HK for like 30 seconds, meaning you had to have it held down suring the fight also.

Failing that, I'd just do the ol' possess-and-explode fatality.

And that's one of the reason of why the old games ruled
They had a lot of tricks they you never knew if were true or not, sadly the internet (and the death of arcades) killed some magic in videogames
There were lot of theories, SPECIALLY with MK2, like the sexality, the cheat to fight against the burning guy at the background, if you won with 10 perfects ryu will appear to challenge you, and lots of other silly thing that are ridiculous in retrospective, but back in the day were totally believable for some odd reason
