This whole thing reminds me of a part of the book Friday Night Lights. In the section that describes Dallas Carter High School, they go into how the athletes were able to get away with anything. But then, the star player was involved in a little scandal, when one of the teachers wouldn't allow him to just pass the class. He failed, thus making the player ineligible, thus making Carter ineligible for playoffs due to him playing. However, they went to court over it, and were able to make it so that he could play, and Dallas Carter won the State Championship that year. However, 3 years later, the UIL actually stripped Carter of the title because of the ineligible player. And that player ended up going to prison for robbery as he and a few other players committed robbery in quite a few gas stations.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Georgia takes Auburn out this week.

The NCAA ended Dez Bryant's college career for allegations not half as bad as this. If there is something to this (and that's looking much more like a sure thing) and they don't act against Cam it will just show how big of a joke they are as a regulatory agency. Yeah. Plus what really got Dez in trouble was him lieing about talking to Sanders. I think Cam and his dad did something far worse by not even telling anyone about this. It is all but assured Cam and Auburn get hit BIG TIME for this, but in the early days of this situation, I still had lingering worries that the NCAA wouldn't do shit, thus confirming my fears that they have a bias towards the SEC.

I think now the NCAA and Auburn's hands are tied. Cam may be a victim in all of this, but the bottom line is he is inelligible. And if I was Cam and this is all true, I would have a huge issue with my father basically ruining my career for his own greed.

Right. I think the only place they really interact is in the academic tutoring department that most major programs have. All quality DI schools have tutors automatically assigned to scholarship athletes whether they want or need them. I knew a scholarship tennis player at Appalachian State who didn't use his tutor for anything other than sex.....and signing off on his mandatory tutor hours after the sex.

For some reason I doubt special ed student/tutor relations happen nearly as often.

I am solidly behind you dude. If someone had wanted to exploit my talents such as they are for a four year education at Texas A&M I would not complain about them selling my jersey in the student store at the footlocker in the mall. Student Athelete. Student comes before and always should come before "Athelete" in that phrase While I agree that athletes should be getting royalty checks or NFL-lite salaries, it'd be wrong to act like no students get money on the academic side. Graduate students often get stipends from the university, and I got paid for one of my student activities (writing for the campus newspaper). These amounts aren't huge by any means (I doubt I could eat lunch for the amount I was paid per story by the college paper), but the student part doesn't mean the university never cuts them a check, even if they already do have scholarships. That's why I'd support the idea for stipends. Nothing huge, but something small wouldn't be completely unjustified. I think I mentioned my support for stipens earlier but my later posts may have shifted focus onto the scholorship argument. Stipends for atheletes should be higher yes. I watched my sister exploit grants and scholarships and basically take sizable stipends away. Give the guys a bit of spending cash so they can eat and buy a few nice suits(Players have been gifted many many wardrobes of clothing from boosters with this logic EX: Peter Warwick)

For all the talk about "schools are giving these kids a free education, worth $120K" if Auburn goes to the BCS Title game, they get a $15 MILLION payout. I'm not suggesting they pay these players like NFL guys, but maybe a stipend of $500 a month or something, anything.

You'd be surprised how little it turns out to be after conference payouts, travel expenses, etc. After their National Title in 2006, Florida's $13 million ended up only being $17,000 after payouts and expenses.

Adding to Herr's post, the $15 million is split equally among all the schools in the conference, so Auburn, if they reach the title game, would get only $1.25 million out of it. I think that the conference gets more money if they have a 2nd school getting an at-large spot.

Cam Newton announced as starter. Fans at Auburn give deafening ovation. At this point I guess you're already 10 games deep. May as well go for broke.
