I really like Matt Striker's commentary, he seems to be the only guy on the mic that is trying to keep kayfabe. However, his explanation of how the tag team of Kaval and Kofi on Smackdown this week had to be the most ridiculous explanation he's ever given.
If I remember correctly, he said that Kaval was at Gamespot playing Smackdown vs. Raw and Kofi came into the store and started playing with Kaval and they played video games together for 3 hours, and decided then and there to team together. It's just such a goofy explanation of how a tag team came together, I mean they're in the same locker room every week, and yet they "accidentally" run into each other at a video game store and form a tag team? I loved that Cole called him out on that, too.
Wouldn't make more sense that Kofi wanted to team with him, because he was a pro on NXT and mentioned several times that he was impressed by Kaval and thought he was a real ninja?
Oh well, I still like it when Striker explains things, but this one was too goofy to not bring up.

I can see your point but I liked what Striker did. Like you say, he's keeping kayfabe alive and at least he cares about his job. Cole can mock him all he likes but Striker has been better in 2 years than Cole has in 13.

In fairness, Striker (or Grisham) did bring up that Kofi said Kaval was his favorite rookie of NXT 2.

Yeah it was pretty ridiculous for a lot of reasons.
Main reason being SDvR is most likely on demo at exactly zero Gamestops right now.

The random "Drew McIntyre intimidated a baggage handler" story was even worse. I'm actually glad Cole questioned it.
I like Striker, but I do agree that sometimes he goes overboard for no real reason.

For me, the most ridiculous thing was that Striker got the name of the game wrong. Raw Vs Smackdown 2011 doesn't exist.

Striker just tries way, way too hard for my liking. Curse him!!! Why can't he just phone it in like the rest of the announce team?!!!

There's trying to sell a current storyline and then there's making up all these absurd backstories and random facts about a wrestler. I don't think anyone casual fan watching is going to care why Cody Rhodes doesn't wear kneepads, or how much pressure Dolph Ziggler puts on a sleeper hold, or some bullshit story about Kofi Kingston and Kaval in a gamestore. And like you said, a lot of other announcers phone it in, so it just seems like a weird contrast.

Striker is the best commentator in WWE right now. In my own humble opinion.
I'm not going to jump on the Cole bandwagon.
Sure, Striker does some funny things in explaining things, but he tries. He knows the moveset, knowing that he's a teacher and actually loves professional wrestling. King just phones it in now, and Todd Grisham & Josh Matthews are just really "there" I suppose. Though I enjoy the Striker/Todd pairing.
Whether people tell Cole to call Striker up on things. "Wait, you aren't allowed to say the actual move names! We didn't allow Styles to do that, we won't allow you!" Or WHATEVER it is, I can enjoy Striker.

Strikers fictional histories are hit an miss Grisham came up with what I think is the absolute worst one, though. He was calling a Kofi Kingston match and I think he was saying that Kofi trained to be a wrestler in primitive Africa by building a ring out of bamboo or some such. Striker's reaction was along the lines of "What the hell are you talking about? Bamboo??? He didn't train like that!" Kofi, of course, has lived in the U.S. since he was an infant. EDIT TO ADD: Okay, found it, from the July 30th Smackdown. GRISHAM: Kofi Kingston, who grew up in Ghana, West Africa... (No he didn't. He was born there. He grew up in the States.) GRISHAM: ...had some very unorthodox training methods growing up, said he didn't have weights, built his own obstacle course, and would run through it. STRIKER: What was the obstacle course made of? GRISHAM: It was made of bamboo, I'm sure, and dirt, right? But he said he got all the neighborhood kids to run through it with him, he'd make it so difficult that he would be the ONLY one who could make it all the way through it. STRIKER: Do you just make this stuff up? GRISHAM (indignant): No, I do some research! Why don't you try it? STRIKER: BAMBOO??? Really? GRISHAM: Have you been to Ghana? STRIKER: No... GRISHAM (sounding very satisfied with himself for making such a clever point and defeating Striker's ridiculous statement): Okay. I'll ask: has anybody here ever been to Ghana? Because call it a hunch, but something tells me that the people who live there are not uncivilized savages living in mud huts and building things out of bamboo as Grisham seems to believe.

He should have said they decided to team just on the basis that both their names start with the letter "K".

I like how they met up while playing a video game that isn't going to be out for another two and a half weeks.

He should have said they decided to team just on the basis that both their names start with the letter "K". So that they can be team KKK (Kaval/Kofi Kingston)? Yeah, I am thinking that they should probably not do that.

It's refreshing to have an announcer with such passion though, even though he does get on my nerves at times and overdo it. I think Kaval, Kofi and Kelly should form a trio called KKK. No?

Technically, but WWE loves to drop first names; (see Lashley, Bobby; Snitsky, Gene) so just have them drop a Kelly and also the Kofi part.
