Anyone who won't watch this film because of Cera is an ignoramus. It's a very solid movie; I wonder if most people around here refuse to enjoy it because it has "hipster" leanings (somehow). The thing is, there isn't any of that leanings. From what I saw in the movie, it pretty much mocks "hipsterism" all the way. Hell... {Spoiler}even the instrumental that plays during the final fight (after the 1-up) is entitled "Death to Hipsters", or something like that.

I watched it a week ago and I actually thought it was quite naff and not in the British "It's so naff it's good" lark. I found the premise naff and Michael Cera is naff.
Also, the stigma of having my favourite musician/mancrush Beck as the song writer for the naff band in the naff film makes me want to cry manly tears of sadness.
I don't like this film and I don't give one if any of you hate me for it.
That goes for you too, Scott Pilgrim.

Yeah, Ramona doesn't have anything to justify the trouble she gives Scott. Now, we all fall for girls who have nothing to offer us, but that was just sad.

I have just one simple, impulsive question...and it would be great if someone could give me a clear answer on this:
Is it ever explained how Scott Pilgrim is able to afford/buy a Rickenbacker bass?
It's a classic, and it's not just any bass guitar; that's a bass you have to "Email for Price".

Also you figure the movie might be filtered through the mind of Pilgrim and he sees himself as awesome when what he might have is not awesome.

I watched some of it and could not stand it. It is way too nerdy. So those of us who liked it are nerds? Ok then.

Also you figure the movie might be filtered through the mind of Pilgrim and he sees himself as awesome when what he might have is not awesome. That actually happens in the books as well. Like for example, he imagined this AWESOME scenario for how he hooked up with Kim Pine in high school. Basically it played out like an old school video game. Kim was kidnapped by guys from another school, Scott goes to that school and beats up 100 enemies and defeats the final boss and gets Kim. In reality, Kim was kinda, sorta going out with a somewhat short and very scrawny nerdy Chinese kid, and Scott punched him out.

My friend let me borrow the books and I couldn't understand how anyone could like it. The characters are completely unlikable and trite, Scott is whiny, and Ramona has the personality of a diner waitress, yet people who read it think Scott is "just a normal guy" and Ramona is some kind of dream girl. Maybe if I was 16-20 and my world was that petty, sure, I could relate. But as it stands now? No. The pandering of countless references didn't help either. It's kinda funny to throw in some "1up" or River City Ransom references into your first two books, but when that's all your series becomes, it's just lazy. It becomes trash pandering to anyone who likes anime or video games and feels misunderstood by girls presented by a completely unlikable main character and 40 video game/"hip" buzzwords on every page. It is doing to men what Twilight does to women.

It is doing to men what Twilight does to women. Uh, are you serious? Completely. Ramona is approached by an awkward nerd who starts talking about Pac-Man and soon after thinks, "oh, finally, a guy who will help me overcome my past!" Saying "FULL OF WIN" in an NES controller t-shirt is not gonna help you score the girls, dudes. Beyond that, the way he deals with Knives in the books was disgusting. While Twilight is showing girls that they should just stand back and let the creepy stoic men help them out, Scott Pilgrim is on the other end of the spectrum, making sure men are kept as manbaby as possible.

Yes, because films featuring people turning into coins and 107 year old telekinetic vampires are not escapist pieces of fluff, they are guides for life.
And since when do unlikeable characters equal bad films?
